They shouldn't be so hard on their team. I suppose if we started 0-2 it would be like that around here too. LOL

I actually thought that "Scandal" reruns would be more in their viewing preferences.

Good luck against UNC.

Playing UNC at home is a win in my book. If you keep it reasonably close, you can't lose this one.

That's my concern. They're 0-2 and coming into a game that they expected to win, but now also need to win. A loss puts their bowl eligibility in grave danger before the first leaf even hints at turning. There's pretty much no chance that they'll chalk this up as a given, 80-20 notwithstanding.

Coastal Carolina rolled up almost 400 rushing yards on UMass.
Although we scored 31 vs Albany, the offense was only a little better statistically, passing and rushing, than that of Morgan State vs Albany Saturday.

To score more, we have to run, period.

Against Albany and UMass, we should have been able to get 3-4 yards per carry just by pushing; stacked box or no stacked box. I was really surprised after the Albany game, but hoped they just had an anomalous FCS run D. But...after seeing CCU roll on the ground vs UMass I am disturbed.

Traps, power plays, isolations, leads, pitchouts, options, pick passes, and quick (historically ours have seemed to set up too slowly) screens are just some ways to attack the loaded box without a great vertical passing offense.
We cannot continue to run just the inside zone read (Hoy) or the inside handoff (LaRussa) against stacked defenses if we cannot get an OLine push.

That is right back to Bentley's first start. Our only advantage now is that both QBs can scramble, and at least LaRussa can throw on the run.

It will not get easier than these first two games.

I think we've seen an absolute pure vanilla offense in the first 2 games. Very few different plays being run. I think we will see a lot more in the UNC game. Stuff we haven't seen yet - and they haven't either. We've won with just the basics. I'm looking forward to a bit more offensive creativity in the UNC game and I think we will see it.

FWIW, Coastal had 321 yards on 47 carries. Hawaii struggled gaining 112 yards on 35 carries. We had 197 yards on 48 carries. So far, 2 out of 3 games have seen Umass have a decent run stopping unit.

Morgan State had 0 point and 214 yards on 63 plays. (4.3 ypp, 2.8 ypc)
ODU had 31 points and 285 yards on 57 plays (7.2 ypp, 3.2 ypc)

That is a pretty big difference.

The run game was poor against Albany and not great against UMASS, but it was a step forward from week 1 to week 2. Its going to have to be a much better vs. UNC for sure though.

We need an Offense. Hopefully dude above is right about our team just holding back for this game and the VT game and there we will see stuff not seen previously. I would like to know what happened to the double tight end sets. We need that for the lack of QB experience.

Well, a great RB can absolutely change an offense, retro. Thankfully, Lawry is that. Here's hoping that hammy is ready to roll.

What if it's all been an elaborate ruse this whole time and Lawry is ready to go but the coaching staff didn't want to provide any film to opponents?

They let him play if he took it easy but he couldn't help it and broke a 41 yard TD against UAlbany so he was benched.

I think if Hoy comes around to making most of the throws. He is our guy moving forward. He just gives us that triple threat option that we have never had before. He just needs to be able to consistently run the offense and we cant stall inside the redzone.

If the coaching staff deliberately held back a player to prevent other opponents from seeing them play (despite seeing him for 3 other years) they would be fired on the spot.

"Hey Mrs. Lawry, I know your kid has a shot at the NFL, but we are going to hold him back the first couple games so UNC doesn't see our film of him."

Plus they were in a close game with UMass where they were having less success with the run than Coastal Carolina the week before. If ODU lost while leaving a healthy Lawry on the bench because the coaches thought they were being sneaky, there'd be hell to pay.

My point wasn't on personnel but on play calling. Wasn't saying they are keeping players out.
I was saying they have been running an incredibly small set of plays.
There's much more to our offense than what we've seen to date imo.
We'll see.
