RE: 2017: UH will have a QB controversy
Didn't you know that Allen couldn't run when you recruited him? You had a couple recruiting cycles to get some burners on the field.

RE: 2017: UH will have a QB controversy
Come back from the ledge.......
I was as unimpressed by that win as the next guy buy you can't pin it all on Allen.
The most glaring problem I saw on offense was the complete lack or perimeter blocking by our WR's.
They were blown up time after time which in turn completely blew up play after play.....
One Int (the one close to the EZ) was completely on Allen but the other one was guess what..... our WR getting blown up yet again.
The two biggest problems I saw on Saturday (one I predicted and one I didn't see coming) were these.
1. Our WR's need to learn/re-learn how to block!!!!
2. (The one I saw coming) we are weak on the outside on defense.
We won that game thanks to Oliver (Blocked FG, and the Forces Fumble) but he can't do it by himself every game.
We deserved to lose that game. AZ left at least 14 points on the field thanks to our weak play at corner. That said we left 10-14 on the field as well due to our "rust" or whatever you want to call it.
The blocking is an issue that can be corrected. I am more worried about our corner play against more effective passing teams. Let's hope they sort it out by then.

Glad I wasn't the only one who saw it. No flags. But that's exactly what Allen was doing. The play was rushed to draw the penalty.

We definitely need to open the playbook for Kyle Allen, take advantage of his ability to make deep throws all over the field. Kyle Allen completed a pass in the first half that very NFL QB's can make. He's has a great arm but must protect the ball and make better decisions while coaches need to a better job setting him up for success.

How about the pick Wilder had but got called back!
That was a clear catch and fumble and AZ knew it that's why they rushed the next play and got 30+ on us!
Refs were adequate but definitely shaking some of their own rust off themselves.

Agreed and though I hope the lateral pass isn't such a big part of our offense as it was Saturday but more often than not those play went for negative yardage thanks to poor blocking.
Man we are going to miss Chad Allen! Dude didn't amount to much in the stat sheets but that man could block and opened up a lot of lanes for the other guys.

I watched the entire game against Arizona. The better team won.
He's going to be a good QB for you guys. Give him time. It's his first game in this system, there's a learning curve for this stuff.
If Allen was more comfortable, you would have won by 30.

I rewatched alot of the game. We made a ton of mistakes on offense. Not talking about physical mistakes (getting beat by the DL or dropping balls). For instance, on one play both tackles ignored the outside rush and went to block in the second level on a pass play causing Allen to throw the ball away. Clearly everyone wasnt on the same page--it would appear those two tackles thought it was a running play. On another series, a screen play was set for a big gain as Bonner caught the ball with the other reciever holding his block and 2 OL's sweeping into the flats. Rather than getting a hat on each of the two potential tacklers, both lineman went after the same guy leaving the other fellow wide open to make the play. That kind of stuff will be worked out.

RE: 2017: UH will have a QB controversy
I'm not worried after just one game. I figured it'd be a sloppy game, all things considered, with the disrupted practices - in Austin, etc.
I'm also not worried about Allen being the starter, unless he pulls a Piland/Okorn and starts pitching INTs all over the place. I think EVERYONE was surprised when those two ended up turning it over like crazy after showing such promise the year before. But Allen didn't have the luxury of playing the year before, and if CMA thinks he's better right now than the other QBs then I've no reason to doubt him.
One thing I learned about CMA, he has a reason for the game plan and it's not always obvious to us fans.

Post Game Applewhite indicated we were holding back on play calls. Left me wondering what we are waiting for.

What's this about having too many men on the field but it not being called??? Sounds familiar...

There is no way Allen can run the read option or do pass-run option. Every time he ran the ball and knew he was going to get hit he cringed and slowed down.
Post a runs like a RB. But he can throw it as well. THAT is what this offense is geared for. The QB has to be a threat to run to keep the D honest.

Case keenum would indicate this is not necessarily true.

Please explain...
Keenum ran the Air Raid and the Briles O. The only time he ran is when the receivers ran off the DBs and there were clear areas to safely run.

You misunderstand. Im saying that just because the offense is geared towards a mobile qb offense doesn't mean its the only option.
Case Keenum has shown us how a non mobile qb can be successful, or in this case how kyle allen can be successful.
