2017: UH will have a QB controversy
First off, UH got the win so everyone is please. The downside is that CMA and CBJ are trying to put a square peg into a round hole.
Kyle Allen, as great as he was in HS is NOT the right style of QB to run this offense. If this were a Mike Leach offense or pass-first offense then I would say Kyle Allen is the guy for the job. He has good pocket mobility, a great arm, and some deft touch. However he poses absolutely NO threat to run the ball. And this offense is predicated on have an athletic QB that can run the ball like a back and still make some throws.

We recruited WRs who are big and good blockers with possession receiver type hands and speed. We have no Blazers that will outrun a DB. That is essential in an offense where the QB pulls the trigger and not pull it down to run.

Regardless of first-game rust, KA played in the SEc for two years. He is not an unknown commodity. Unless he can be a threat to run it (which he cannot) he will struggle mightily. Just look at how AZ played tight to the line because they had no respect for our WR speed. This took away the horizontal passing game. And we do not have speed to go deep. GWJr made most of his big plays breaking containment then throwing it to wide open WRs just find soft spots in the D.

The stats that stick out to me are the TWO interceptions. I know the WR fell down on one, but he was well covered. And the FUMBLE trying to run the ball. He seemed very timid since he is not an athletic runner who knows how to avoid taking big hits.

No doubt he has great QB talent for another system. But it looks like he was ordained the position. When Ward was a Fr and came in with State Championships and something like 45-2 TD:INT retio I could not understand why he was not even given a chance. Then when O'Korn finally was replaced GWJr lit it up. But there was no QB competition, JOK was just given the job. (In fairness to OKorn h display well for Meechum as OC).

This O requires a certain skill set from the QB and Postma or King are better suited to it. We cannot have 3 turnovers per game and expect to win many. I always home for the best for my Coogs, but it is my observation that CMA is making a mistake using a single faceted QB.

I agree

Allen has not played for nearly 20 months, of course he's going to be rusty... But even then he showed flashes of potential while in the pocket.

And based on yesterday's performance he wasn't the only one who looked somewhat out of place.

Allen is our QB

If there is qb controversy then its only because applewhite refuses to adapt to his offense to fit the players he has.

This is one of the reasons i was not a fan of applewhite. He constantly tries to get his plays to work even when they fail and refuses to adapt.

Could be just like '13/14 with JOK and Ward, we have to lose a few games in order for them to give king or postma a try.. then again Allen may step up and deliver, he has a high ceiling if we call the right plays and don't try to run greg ward's offense.

That's what I think, too. I watched the entire AZ game. Allen is a good QB. He is just completely different from Greg Ward. A typical pro set pocket passer. But AZ was getting pressure on him, especially the second half, and he's definitely not a scrambler.

I think he will be fine as he gets a couple more games under his belt.

I predict we will see a much better game from Allen against Rice. Can't make too much of an assessment from one game.

I don't know who said it in another thread but they were correct when talking about why the P5 wins more games then the G5. Here is the paraphrase --> "it's because the P5 has better recruits and more talent".

Kyle Allen is the best talent at QB for Houston. If the coach can't figure out a way to use that talent to the fullest then he isn't much of a coach and should be replaced.

Yes but wrong wrong wrong and wrong

Houston has always gotten great recruiting... You should look into Houston recruiting while in the AAC and before.

Houston brings the eyeballs and than some to the AAC... Don't mean to brag but C'mon man... Enough with giving the so called p5 more excuses. My

Just to be fair to Allen when he fumbled the ball, he snapped the ball when Arizona had 12 men on the field. The early snap was probably intentional to draw a penalty which didn't happen. Refs didn't call it.

With all due respect---what "style" of offense do we run? We were running the Air Raid. By the time Ward and O'Korn got here---We were sorta running a bastardized version of the Air Raid. The Herman offense was a spread with zone read and elements of the Air Raid. I dont really know what you'd call what we run. Here is the thing, both Herman and Applewhite have said you tailor the offense to the talent---not the other way around. So, whatever we run, it will be an offense that accentuates what our QB does well, not what he struggles to do.

Thus, as the weeks proceed, we will see the offense tailored to highlight what Allen does well. What I really think would work for Allen is the run/pass option.--maybe even mix in the a zone read with a rolling run/pass option. That could be pretty difficult to defend. The Memphis run/pass option is pretty tough to stop in my opinion.

Kyle Allen is the best talent at QB for Houston. If the coach can't figure out a way to use that talent to the fullest then he isn't much of a coach and should be replaced.

This! A good coach knows how to make an average player look like a superstar. Just look at nick saban or bill belichick.

If there is qb controversy then its only because applewhite refuses to adapt to his offense to fit the players he has.

This is one of the reasons i was not a fan of applewhite. He constantly tries to get his plays to work even when they fail and refuses to adapt.

LOL... What on earth are you talking about...

What i mean is he will try to force things that are not there rather than adapt to what the other team is giving him.

You do realize this is not the NFL right??

What does the nfl have to do with this? Last i checked nick saban doesn't coach in the nfl, but he is able to adapt his defenses/offenses to make almost any team look fcs.
