You need a very good QB. BG beat us big time the 2 years Matt Johnson played, and we beat them big team when he didn't play. WMU will take a good-sized step back this year unless Wassink turns out to be surprisingly good. Still too soon to tell after WMU's schedule so far.

Lynch played against Florida State and Utah State in bowl games. Both were top 10 defenses, at least statistically. FSU certainly was. And they would have won anyway, probably, if we could have kicked FGs against Utah State. He didn't play real well anyway, but still.

The biggest problem in those games goes back to the same thing haunting us the past few years, very poor coaching and very poor play calling. The Utah State game may have had another component in it, in that no one on the team cared about that game. The Utah St game was right after losing an Orange Bowl spot in MACC, so I can understand how usually meaningless bowl game became even more meaningless.
