Did a little research--looks like Missouri Valley refs. OVC refs are too far south. MVC makes more sense.

EIU plays in the OVC. Why would Missouri Valley refs be doing our game?

Google the referee, David Siegle and the back judge, Kurt Waldenbach. They show up doing MVC games last year. OVC teams are in Tennessee, Kentucky while MVC teams are in mainly in Illinois and Iowa. Easier travel.

Interesting. I always though that most away teams brought refs from their conference as part of the contract negotiation. Makes sense though

My guess is that since NIU has to pay the refs based on fixed costs plus travel costs, EIU agreed to MVC refs (also FCS) rather than a mixed MAC/Big Ten crew who get paid more. Probably increased EIU's payout.

My guess is that since NIU has to pay the refs based on fixed costs plus travel costs, EIU agreed to MVC refs (also FCS and close by) rather than a mixed MAC/Big Ten crew who get paid more or an OVC crew which would have had increased travel costs. Probably increased EIU's payout.
