Why not, is it a 2-1 / 3-1 rather than a buy game?
Iowa State is a straight up home and home. Besides it's Iowa State......

Is this normal for a school in a conference to do? I know an Indy like NMSU or UMASS needs these to survive...1 money game in a year I understand. But 3? Does this mean that Kent St wouldn't make it as an FBS program if they didn't have the 5 million they'll receive for playing 3 money games?
As a Kent fan I am hoping that they are doing it in order to pay the coaches more. Kent is at or near the bottom in coaching pay and it makes it hard to get or keep a semi decent coach. I am perfectly fine with the setup as long as it leads to a better coach. Plus it does make for a good road trip.

Kent State is probably the worst supported team in the MAC overall imo. Just as an outsider, their program has structural problems relating to their administration that make it really tough for them to compete, on top of having a pretty small fan base, almost no history to draw on, and a good basketball program that commands most attention at the school. EMU has Michigan in their backyard but they've been investing for a few years now and we're seeing some payoff. The MAC is such an even playing field compared to other conferences that it just takes one hire to really change the culture, but they kinda had that in 2012 and it didn't do much in the long run.

Agreed, but EMU overall is the worst-supported team in the MAC. Kent St basketball makes up for their football. While EMU basketball is generally decent, it's below the MAC powers, and up until the past couple seasons, football has been the worst in FBS.

Iowa State is a straight up home and home.
Then that doesn't count at all ... it's not a mere technicality.

I don't know if this is fair ... I know Kent was only 10-8 in the conference last year, but they've been in the top two as often as not over the past few decades, and they did win the tourney ... and after the strategic review recommending a focus on Basketball, the resources to do even better might yet flow ...

Oh, wait, you were talking about the football program. Yeah, any coach that wins at football at Kent State is going to get snatched up by a non-power Big Ten school as someone who may be able to win against schools with superior resources.

They have three next year as well
@Illinois
@Penn State
@Ole Miss
Also 2 in 2019 with an open date for one more.
2019
08/31 - at Arizona State
09/14 - at Auburn
One interesting side effect from this strategy is that Kent must schedule a home FCS game, for which it must pay, in order to make its minimum 5 home dates under NCAA rules.

RE: 3 pay day games in 1 season? New normal for some?
I think this is either brilliant or stupid. It will either drive people away from the program (stupid) or attract recruits who felt slighted by big programs and who want to prove the big boys wrong (brilliant.) If a school like Buffalo did this with 3 B1G schools consistently on their schedule and win 2/3 on average, they could end up in the B1G maybe 15-20 years down the road. That sounds like a long time, but it could be a worthwhile investment.

ECU routinely has the most brutal OOC schedule of anyone.

While ECU may take an occasional payday game, it appears that most of its future P5 opponents have agreed to home and homes. Playing in the American with P5 aspirations, it's just smart for ECU to schedule that way. Kent does not appear to be in that situation, though, taking payday games to help pay the bills. I'm not criticizing, just pointing out that it's a different situation.

Kent has no fans so they need to make money some way.
If you have no fans, then why have a team. Makes no sense to me

To compete in MAC BBall, baseball and golf, they have this requirement you also have to play FBS football.

RE: 3 pay day games in 1 season? New normal for some?
Years ago UAB had an AD that dictated two buy games per year to pay the bills while trying to make one a realistic chance for an upset (e.g., Miss St, Kansas, Vandy). Current coach Bill Clark put a stop to that because, as someone else pointed out, it likely cripples bowl chances in FBS. With 8 conference games, we typically do:
1) FCS
2) G5 home/away
3) G5 away/home (to balance #2...South Alabama and Akron beginning 2018 in UAB's case), G5 one-off, or lower P5 2/1 if the opportunity comes
4) P5 buy game in recruiting area (we had a choice between @Oregon and @Texas A&M for 2018 and chose the latter)
