RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
Big caveat: Two of the three wins were against smaller schools and are not necessarily indicative of how we will fare against D1 opponents. The win over Utah Valley, however, was a good win and hopefully is a sign of how the season will be an improvement over last year’s debacle.

125 Bardezbain is a high risk, high reward wrestler. He can score lots of points, but his defense can suffer as a result. He won’t be boring to watch.
133 Tutolo is a hammer on top and a complete wrestler. He effectively used his legs to make life very difficult for his opponents trapped on bottom.
141 Rooney demonstrated that he’s stronger than last year, utilizing an effective front headlock to score. He was also more aggressive and wrestled like a 4-time HS place winner. Driscoll wrestled against Mercyhurst and had a tough time against a true freshman that wrestled at Woodridge while in high school. I think Rooney has the edge.
149 Monico is solid for a RS freshman, going 3-0.
157 Sparkman will be another fun wrestler to watch. Along with 3 tech falls, he had a dirty throw that had the KSU reserves buzzing.
165 Bast looked better than last year going 2-1.
174 Barreiro went 3-0 and showed an edge that wasn’t what you typically see from a RS freshman.
184 Mast struggled against his Lake Erie opponent, which isn’t a good sign. He’s the only wrestler that went 1-2.
197 Suglio looked very good with an effective tilt that his opponents couldn’t stop. 2 tech falls and a pin are what you’d expect from a 5th year senior.
285 Nye went 2-1 but struggled against Lake Erie.

184 and 285 seem to remain the question marks.

Any idea why Tutolo forfeited. Did they just decide not to wrestle him or is he banged up?

Good question. My personal opinion is that the coaching staff has pushed injured wrestlers in prior years without benefit (Ian Miller, for example) and are taking a more cautious approach this year. Rooney sat instead of wrestling for 3rd, Tutolo didn’t wrestle at all, and Monico sat out after losing his first match. The season is a marathon, not a sprint, so what’s the point of aggravating something minor during meaningless competition?

A couple of wins today. Beat Virginia 20-18 and then Hofstra 26-12. In both matches we forfeited at 125 and we’re able to overcome it. Two OT wins against Virginia were the difference.

Even with 2 forfeits at 125, we beat Hofstra and had a nice win against Virginia. Nye came though with a big win at 285 to top Virginia. True freshman Colin McCracken has taken over at 184 and had 2 wins. What a difference a year makes.

Why did KSU forfeit @ 125lbs in both matches? Seems crazy when they have 3 capable wrestlers at that weight this season.

Team looks much better than year already. The only questions that remain

Will it be Suglio or Conel @ 197lbs?
Will Devin Nye ever become more than a .500 wrestler?

Bardezbain wrestled on Sunday in the individual tournament so he was healthy. Maybe as Lambert said above they are just being careful early in the year.
