Almost every single secondary in the country is going to have blown coverages in week 1. I agree that there were some sketchy moments that they got away with...but overall the defensive backfield is as stacked as we've had in a long time. The pass rush should get better over time as well which always helps.

RE: Boston College Game Thoughts
We dont have an elite quarterback, so we play offense and call plays like a team without an elite quarterback, pretty simple really, we were so spoiled by harnish and lynch, people think they are normal, they are what we should see, they were not, they were exceptional, now we have been slowed down by average to below average quarterback play and development

The defense played a great game, hopefully the offense can do more to keep them off the field

The punter is really good, and having a good defense and a good punter can keep you in a lot of games

its going to be very frustrating to watch, because our expectations on offense are so high

ball protection is key, risk taking is very low, its how they want to win, how they believe they can win, so not very exciting for us as fans

We dont have a great quarterback on the roster but my biggest issue is the progression of what we have

Chandler Harnish as a sophomore, pretty solid, a lot of holes in his game though, Chandler Harnish as a junior, like a different kid showed up to play, thats how much better he got from one season to the next.

Graham doesnt seem to have taken that step forward, certainly willing to give some more games to him though, plays hard, does what he coaches ask of him, good leader for his team mates, great intangibles.

Offensive line last year, not very good, offensive line against BC, played a pretty solid game

Front 7 on defense last year, not great, front 7 on defense against BC, played one of the best games Ive seen by our front 7 in a long time

Good lines keep you in games, good kickers (yes hagan can do better) keep you in games

win ugly is what are going to be this year, probably win some games we shouldnt and lose some games we shouldnt

overall, I feel better about the team after the game then I did before it, going in I thought we were in worse shape on defense then we are.

Never been a huge Carey fan, thought he did great job with the team getting them revved up to play, they gave everything they had. I like to see leadership and players giving it everything, haven't always seen that from our team, so great to see it last Friday. I think we win at least 6 games and could surprise some people.

Go Huskies!

Great post. The only thing I would modify is the statement that we don't have a great QB on the roster. I would say we don't have anyone who is a great QB at the moment, which is probably what you meant. Several of those guys have the ability to become great QBs down the line.

One thing I noticed was how fast Trayshon Foster was getting downfield on kick-offs. He caught a couple guys from behind. Special teams are looking really good this year. Sabock is the new special teams co-ordinator so maybe some youthful exuberance is helping.

Agreed, hopefully we get to see that progression

I'd also disagree with the OL not being good last year. Pretty sure they were top 3 in the country for sacks allowed per drop back.

RE: Boston College Game Thoughts
Finally watched the game video. And I'll say - I can't wait for MAC play. While there were some concerns, overall I think there's a really good team hidden behind an offense that just needs to find what it can do best consistently. BC's defense forced NIU's offense into some things they're not good at. Other big, fast defenses have done the same to other Huskie teams.

The play calling wasn't atrocious either. The Beebe 4th and 1 was. That was really dumb. But the now infamous 3 runs before half? On 1st and 2nd they looked like qb reads. If Graham had kept it, he'd still be running right now. Definitely on 1st down. There was no contain outside at all. And even on 2nd he would have gained at least the first down.

Graham needs confidence. Confidence to quit playing so safe. He needs a nice run of MAC games where he can establish himself. He will never be great(stop jumping up when you're running and about to get hit), but he could guide an adequate offense until it finds its next big play maker

This is quite true but the reason for this starts at the top. That is how he is instructed to play. Throwing the ball 20 yards past a receiver is not seen as a mistake , it's called not turning it over. Graham's being shattered as a player is largely a product of his environment.

Sabock? The real Mike Sabock? I went to the team website and did not see his name there.

A little more to that stat than just line play, but ok

I feel like so far, one game in, this o-line looks better than last years

No it's his son Dan. I noticed he's not listed but he's on staff.

Second that on the runs. He's going to get popped bad and on the one play he completely turned his back when seeing the bc player.. Needs to be less tentative

Boston College Game Thoughts
I saw someone had posted that Coach Dierson was the staff member that go hit on the sidelines during the game and had to get an air cast. Turns out it was one of our big donors, Ken Chessick. He just posted this for those who care:

On Friday night, I was standing on the sidelines, rooting for my NIU players, about five players between me and the sideline, and we ran a sweep. The BC defender tackled our player and they collcided at high speed. The wave of players before me split like Moses and the Red Sea, and the tackled and tackler rolled in a wink of an eye and hit my right leg below the knee. They ran back to the field and I was left with an unstable, dislocated right knee and rupture of four knee ligaments. The fantastic orthopedic surgeons on the sideline sprung into action and immediately reduced the dislocation and put me in an immobilizer for my knee. I cannot express my gratitude to Drs. Behl, Choi, and Bodner for their expert care, which prevented many bad potential complications and got my treatment started. I was seen by Dr. Nho at Rush yesterday, and the good news is that I have avoided horrendous complications. The bad news is that I will be in a non-weight bearing brace for 6-8 weeks, hoping that some or all of the ruptured ligaments heal, If not, surgery will be the option, and then the rehabilitation starts. If I was a professional athlete, my career would be over. How much tennis, cycling, hiking, sailing, scuba diving, walking, and skiing (all of which are important parts of my life; even old jocks like to play) is in my future remains to be seen. At present, I am in a lot of right leg pain with lots of swelling and discoloration, and my world consists of my bedroom, lounge chair, and bathroom. I want to thank everyone who has reached out to me and expressed their empathy. I love my Huskie family and I will be back. Next time (next year), I will stay ten yards behind the play, not in first down territory. Like McArthur said, "I shall return!"

The sideline is a very dangerous place. Those players come up fast!
