They tried first to get into the SB and CUSA, after both said no, they get approval for Indy moveup. It will be the best thing that could happen. Liberty would be spending Alabama size money that no SB team would even competitive with.

They'll be like BYU.

Liberty never won in the Big South with a clear financial advantage over all of those schools.

First: NICE game last Saturday!

Second: Just because they have the deep pockets, doesn't mean that they've ever unleashed that power. With that kind of money, is any Head coach safe outside of Alabama or Texas? A few sure, but they could get a lot of coaching talent and build the finest facilities in the country.

Ga State has deep pockets too but you don't see coaches lining up to get on that paper ship

I'm pretty sure Harry Minium's job at the Virginia-Pilot is to stir up crap.

Ok then.

Nah. Typical sour grapes. Goes like this...

LU: >looks up<
"Gee, I'd really like to have those grapes. They look so juicy."
>jumps up repeatedly and fails to reach them<

>walks away muttering<
"Those grapes were probably sour anyway. I'm happy without them."

I'd imagine the offer was made before the decision to go Indy was made and approved.

Dude, it seems like you make this statement in every thread that comes up about Liberty. The Flames won or shared seven of the last nine Big South championships.

And you have a tied record against that sorry little Sun belt call up school, Coastal, and got your ass annhialated by them the last time we played.

But you're right. Liberty is too good for the Sun Belt, so you chose the path of independence. Keep telling yourself that. We beat you 42-7 last year. And you and your cronies genuinely believe you're too good to be associated with the lowly likes of Coastal and the Sun Belt. 07-coffee3

I recall seeing on this board some time ago that Liberty also offered the Belt a substantial number of millions of dollars to let them in. If I weren't feeling lazy I'd dig that thread up but someone else can do it who might care.

RE: (Report) Liberty offered CUSA $24 million
We allegedly offered some compensation to the SBC but it was nowhere near as significant as the CUSA which fit our profile better. We'd give neither any compensation these days as we achieved our goals of getting into FBS on our own. The AAC? Perhaps.

We have little interest in pursuing football conference affiliation until the great rumblings of the 2025 death of Big XII GOR. And no one has any idea what the landscape could look like at that time. We might wind up paired with some of the SBC schools or we may not. Either way we are thrilled with our situation right now. The Sun Belt rebuffing our offer was a major blessing in disguise for us. Thanks!

Don't diminish Liberty's success. They had a very good Big South program and would have been dominant there but for Coastal.

The offer though shows the leadership does not understand academia. It hurt their application far more than it helped because it would have become public (either leaked or shown on the public information tax return).

Liberty was very tone deaf.

Imagine you are a partner at a CPA firm. You interview Bill Smith for partner. His resume is good but not compelling. His social interactions just a bit odd for the firm culture and you think you will turn him down.

He comes back in and offers to pay 10x the equity buy in and you know it will become public.

You now have no choice, you have to reject him because once it leaks you've destroyed the reputation that firm members had the best resume and fit the firm culture.

Equity partnerships are no longer a career defining achievement, it's just something that is for sale.

It's a lot closer to fact than it is to "alleged" and you're correct in that the offer was nowhere near as high as CUSA's, but it was still several million dollars.

If you're happy, then I'm happy. Remember ORU never could buy athletic success with the Lord's money.
