Not a fit for what CUSA wants, for better or worse they've decided on a profile, and that's not even considering potentially controversial waters. Also, adding #15 would mean adding #16 sooner or later and that shiny check quickly fades with 2 more mouths to feed from the increasingly shrinking G5 pie.

That said, dude...

I think they fit the profile pretty well.

Bad football? Check.
Bad basketball? Check.
Lotsa "Potential"? Check.

They're meeting all the requirements.

Start a conference together why don't ya?

Army doesn't need a conference as they are in pretty high demand as an OOC opponent. They were previously courted by the AAC and declined. They have also been declared P5 for scheduling purposes by several of the P5 conferences with requirements to play at least one P5 school OOC.

ODU and Charlotte are going to see the geography with Liberty and say its worth it.

That ship has already sailed. Liberty has far more potential than every CUSA school.

They never did anything in the Big South with that sorry group of schools. How are they going to do something against better schools?

$$$$$

They had that against the sorry ass poor Big South schools yet did nothing.

FBS boils down to three key factors.

1. Money
2. Schedules
3. Recruiting

Liberty is already out performing every G5 team on 1,2. And starting off your season taking down Baylor is going to be a good leg to build on for recruiting....I'm no FCS fan but I would be willing to wager Liberty is going to be a 10 win FCS team this year.

It's quite obvious it was out of fear of Liberty very quickly overshadowing them.

At the end of the day, they don't want to be associated with a school whose enrollment is 85% online. Same reason that Grand Canyon will struggle to find a real conference.

Liberty might end up overshadowing them in football, but this decision was not a football decision.

I think you're wrong on all accounts.

Agree. That said, JMU wouldn't have made a bad #16. Those two would have been among the highest athletic budgets in CUSA. But splitting the meager CUSA earning two more ways couldn't have looked very attractive to CUSA presidents.

ODU, Southern Mississippi, Marshall, Western Kentucky and Rice do have a shot to join the AAC down the road at some point.

RE: ODU Beat Writer on CUSA Possible Regreats Regarding Liberty
Presidents make this type of decisions which ultimately rest on the question of, would I like my university to be associated with Liberty University not just in athletics but academically? With the exception of Rice which is in another level as an institution, the rest of C-USA are public schools in mostly urban areas. Liberty does not fit the profile of a C-USA school regardless of how much money they're throwing at the conference. One thing is UTSA or Old Dominion starting football and looking for a FBS conference to take them and another thing is Liberty doing the same.
