Who ever gives Amazon the largest tax incentives will win out.

Where ever it goes there is going to be a hell of a bidding war for these jobs. No telling what infrastructure improvements and tax breaks will be offered to Amazon to lure them.

I think Atlanta has a very good shot.

With the airport, they seem to be looking more for transportation than logistics (but I only skimmed the RFP). They wanted frequent flights to Seattle, DC and NYC as well as an international airport. So I don't think they are seriously considering DC and NYC. Atlanta has a huge advantage over Charlotte and Raleigh with the airport, although Charlotte may be adequate. Miami has a good airport.

I suspect they will aim for eastern time zone, so that gives Atlanta an advantage over Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. Same for Chicago, but I think they flunk business climate right now. Columbus seems like a reasonable possibility if they look smaller. Think costs eliminate Boston and Philadelphia.

Does Atlanta's airport have enough capacity to handle it. I would have thought they might be maxed out and almost have to kick out Delta to handle Amazon's demand. That was my thinking when I had Raleigh as my dark horse.
This is for a hq, which won't be a big of shipping activity. I don't think airport capacity will be a big hurdle since they're likely just going to be shipping people around, not products.

Two things they specifically states wanting though was an infill project or 100ish acres of shovel ready greenfield. Secondly, they wanted proximity to transit.

As far as Charlotte's airport, we are the 7th busiest airport in the world and still have a 5th runway in the works to further expand capacity. Our airport has been one of our best assets in landing other corporate relocations in the past. Despite the positives of Charlotte, I still think it's a longshot.

I still think Atlanta leads with northern Virginia being 2nd.

I was more referring to post #5, but I'm not really read in enough to know if this is accurate.

This discusses the why of a 2nd HQ.

It seems they have gotten too big to fit so many people and draw sufficient talent to Seattle. There is a good point about diversity of training and backgrounds. My spouse had some contact with P&G and noted that they all seemed the same type of people from the same universities and thought the same way. Now P&G has been successful, but they aren't in rapidly changing industries.

I get it, and I don't. It's still e-commerce. Someone, cough cough, can always build a better mouse trap. It's Amazon right now, but they are a propped up wall street company right now. Their margins are ****. AWS is slipping for them and they have now become big enough that their losing that business because of fear from their competition compounded by that competition pressuring their customers but to use it.

Throw in the anti-trust rumblings and this is interesting to watch longer term. If I'm a fringe city betting the farm here is very leary.

Memphis is preparing a bid.

For years Memphis International (MEM) has been the busiest air cargo airport in the world due to the FedEx Superhub. A couple of years ago that title has gone to an airport in China. MEM is now the 2nd busiest air cargo airport on the planet.

Memphis is dubbed America's Distribution Center. We have air, rail, road & water access. Amazon and FedEx have an existing partnership.

Granted, their new HQ won't necessarily depend on product distribution.

Quote:The city is also home to several Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies including FedEx Corp, AutoZone, International Paper Co., Mueller Industries Inc., Fred’s Inc. and ServiceMaster Global Holdings Inc.

Memphis was recently named as a hot spot for Millennials.

Virginia Beach looks like they are bidding. Seems like a waste of time.

I did not think about Memphis. It is for sure centrally located and there is plenty of experience there in handling both air and truck freight. It also has the ability to bring in goods via the river.

I like how this has turned into everybody trying to sell their city and their part of the country.

My money is on this ending up somewhere decidedly obvious.

Something else to consider for MSP is that the airport was built to handle being the national hub for Northwest air but when Delta bought up North West some of the traffic went down. IOW our Airport, as it is now, has the available capacity to handle a good deal of load which will be brought by Amazon.

There's an easy solution to do just that, but I won't go there in this thread.

The airplane noise is bad now but add in a 24hr commercial hub? Yikes!

I'm about a 10 minute drive from the airport (77) but I would be fine with it if it brought those jobs to the areas tax base. Plus I work in Tech so another big employer in the area would be nice 03-wink..

Besides, the wife and I have been thinking about selling the home and moving another rung out.
