Navy Men's Soccer 3, JMU 1.

I don't know their record vs American, but Dukes seem to have trouble with the Patriot League

Dang, I never noticed men at Navy. Guess it's like that whole dwarf thing.

When did "typing class" get removed from the high school curriculum? Late '80s?

I took it in 1996.

Is there a story behind this or is it lame like Iowa State Cyclones but their mascot is cardinal to rival the hawk at their instate rival Iowa?

Why is Alabama's a elephant? An elephant Tide to roll?

No idea on Alabama. I'm sure there is a back story. I hoped you could provide the one for JMU. Maybe you don't know.

Let me give JMU fans a lesson...

"The first men's basketball team was formed in 1947 and the players chose the nickname “The Dukes,” in honor of Madison President Samuel P. Duke. The players told President Duke they would name their team for him if he'd provide them with towels and equipment.

When the men's intercollegiate athletic program began its rapid expansion in the 1970s, the need arose for a mascot that could be used to generate spirit. There really wasn't any way to turn a “Duke” into a mascot that would engender enthusiasm among students, alumni and other fans.

The idea for the Duke Dog came from Dr. Ray V. Sonner, then director of public affairs. (Sonner later became vice president for university relations and senior vice president. Sonner Hall on campus is named in his honor.) Sonner's rationale was that the stereotypical pet for British royalty, such as a duke, would be an English bulldog. Duke Dog was born."

Husky,
Thanks for the lesson, but already knew all of that , it helped others greatly. Do you know Uconn's record against the Dukes in football?

Even Va. Tech's coach Fuentes defended EZU's losses to WVU & JMU. He said, " there ar not many FBS programs running to their AD's to put JMU on their schedule."

So good luck Coach Mo and the Pirates... go beat the Chokies!

The dog came first. One day while he was taking a crap an administrator noticed how that pile of crap resembled their athletic department. So they adopted the nickname Dookies which was later shortened to Dukes.
