Joe at least works hard and did haul in a decent (although below Tiger standards) class last year.

One of the main drivers of the recruiting issues, to date, is the dead weight of Pooh and Saul. I believe there were better qualified recruiters available upon Tubby's hire, but Tubby allowed fidelity and loyality to supersede the interests of the program.

Oops.

Man... that hashtag backfired

The first priority, McGuire told Smith, is image and perception. McGuire was always "immaculate every time you saw him" and it’s why, Smith noted, he never wears jeans in public or a sweat suit on a plane.

How do you want people to see you, because they’re going to see something. They’re going to form an opinion about you,” Smith said. “I tell my players all the time, ‘You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.' I’ve got a certain image that I want to project. That’s why I’ve never interviewed for a job.”

Yet when Tubby meets up with Joe at the hotel before the in-home, he doesn't immediately tell Joe to take of that stupid f*@king shirt and put something respectable on?

Joe is always recruiting and it appears that he is going to take any avenue he can to get his message across. We may not like his message but he is dedicated.

I do find it funny that Tubby is in the background

Tweeting stupid stuff isn't "recruiting."

Recruiting is fostering relationships over a period of time or being surgical in your attempts to swoop in on guys who might be gettable.

Memphis has built little, if any, solid relationships in Memphis.

It seems that BAM literally finds guys that aren't committed then tries to hard press them without having any real ties.

I keep referring to this analogy, but it's like the desperate guy at last call who is just chasing girls around (while they get free drinks off of him) yet strikes out.

Is that guy working hard? Absolutely.

Is he working smart? Hell no.

Therein lies the difference.

Wow where are you getting your inside information?

Esposito isn't the problem. Is he goofy, yes, of course he is. He's basically the only reason we actually have a roster. The problem is he gets zero help. It's so confusing to me why recruiting isn't a priority for Tubby. It makes his job so much harder to do.

Nothing wrong with Espo's t-shirt. Ayo's twitter handle is "WhyNotMe?‏ @AyoDos_11", Joe was playing on that.

Like others have said, Joe is not the problem.

Again, being a hard worker and being a smart worker are two different things.

You can word hard as hell and still be an abject failure.

So it is a problem if you are wasting valuable time, resources, and assets on chasing guys who have little chance of getting vs. targeting guys who are gettable.

it's not a secret that relationships locally haven't been built to secure the recruits. It's not a stretch to say that if we aren't doing the work locally, then we aren't doing the work nationally.

I don't think the problem is with the relationship with the player, it seems to be with the others around the player that we are lacking. There's no reason to say we shouldn't have to do that, but if you don't put the work in with those around the recruit, you will not get the recruit.

everyone knew, except them apparently, that we really didn't have a shot with him.

I don't mind swinging and missing, I mind that we should have built relationships with people like Tyler Harris, instead of him looking at Colorado State for crap's sake.

The reason why your analogy doesn't work is because guys still do that.

How about this one? It's like the four-flusher guys who crash weddings to pick up chicks.

Bottom Line: If we are only looking at the impact on our BB program, recruiting is the worse problem. There may be more if we get that one fixed. As you and some have said, his coaching was pretty lackluster last year too. Then there's relationships. Why did so many kids leave? We may get a huge exodus after this season.

If we are looking how this lack of support along with its dollar bills will impact the whole athletic program, then there is a much huger problem in the making.

That shirt was terrible. Completely bush league.

Can you imagine Cal, Roy, Self, the Miller brothers, Huggins, K, Shaka, or any other self respecting coach allowing his assistant to even think it's ok to bust that out at a home visit?

If you really want to do a twist on the tagline, do a professional hype video, or just use that term in your pitch.

Obviously, at the least it had zero effect, and perhaps was embarrassingly awkward for the kid to have to stare at and hurt the pitch.

All we have to do is look at the results. We have no commits.

Out of our conference, Tulane, Tulsa and Memphis have no commits.

Couldn't disagree more. Shirt was funny. You are so anti-Tubby at this point that you are criticizing everything.

And yes, I could absolutely see all of the coaches you mention doing the same. Have you not read any books or stories about hoops or football recruiting? The lengths these adult men will go to get the attention of 17 year olds is a little creepy.

Again, we get you don't like Tubby. But nothing wrong with Joe's shirt.

Yeah, so embarrassing that Ayo is smiling, pointing to it, with his arm around Joe.

So you think he liked the t-shirt--just not enough to go all in on Tubby.

Maybe if there had been matching shoes....?

It reeked of desperation.

Memphis is supposed to be a school that considers itself a top 20-30 program.

How many other schools in that tier would allow an assistant to go to a home visit wearing a stupid t-shirt like that?

How about zero others.

That is the point.

Joe got us a home visit. Joe and Tubby couldn't close on one of Ayo's remaining official visits. Life goes on. And the t-shirt was clever.
