The poll question is nuanced. Do not take it as if I'm saying, "WHICH SPORT RULEZZZZZ AMERICASS!!!1111elven". This poll would be far better suited in a non-sports forum. But I wanted to try it here first. I'm genuinely interested in this question because the data obtained could point towards a regional bias that I did not think I had. I cannot see how in a million years some random dude off the street would answer Alabama or USC before Kentucky or North Carolina when asked what college sport's team can you name.

This poll is not concerned with the financial machinery of football, it's trying to extract an unbiased account of brand recognition irrespective of sports sponsored or excelled at. Once the data is obtained, then we can try and make a conclusion.

I want this to be personal to each voter. Vote your first inclination. For me it was very easy. I couldn't have even named the top 5 brands of college football without looking them up. The top 4 from the first group are seared into my brain - and I'm not happy about it one bit.

I suspect that if you asked random American's on the street who barely follow college athletics, what school's name popped into their head when you first mentioned college, I bet they would say North Carolina or Kentucky. I'd be willing to bet big money on it.

Football brands go a lot further than basketball..

even in the 30 for 30 documentary the big east ADs say they couldnt compete with that despite being viewed as the best basketball conference

literally football defines some states..in the election they refered to southern states as the SEC states

another example is the great football school/subpar basketball schools have recruits elite ball players from their football brand (bama and usc as examples). if bama football didnt exist, bama wouldnt be constantly pulling elite 100 recruits...but on the other side, being good in basketball means absolutely nothing on the football side

UCONN recognized the writing on the wall. That's exactly why UCONN flipped on the C7 and aligned with the Big East football schools.

RE: The Brand of College Athletics
Personally, if I was asked to name the top brands in college athletics, more fball brands would be on my list. The only predominantly bball brands that immediately come to mind are UNC, Duke, UK, KU, and UCLA/UCONNW compared to at least double that number for fball. Interestingly enough, I grew up in IL as a bball fan as did many of my peers. Someone on FB noted about six months ago how fball has surpassed bball in popularity amongst our kiddo's generation.

We drove around the Southeast and Midwest this summer and listened to local sports stations along the way. There was way more fball talk on Memorial Day weekend on our trip from AL to Chicago (through AL, TN, KY, IN and IL). Obviously bball talk would have been more of a draw in season, but college fball seems to draw interest year round. This is my $.02 anyway as a midwestern bball fan growing up to a bigger fball fan who still enjoys following bball. YMMV

**UPDATE!**

I spoke with a non-collegiate sports fan over the weekend, she didn't know **** about anything in college athletics but she did recognize several of the teams in the "Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Duke, Indiana/UCLA" group. She's also not really a Kansas person having spent a decade overseas.

RE: The Brand of College Athletics
I may be particularly biased in this poll.

While football fans see Alabama as the Mecca, they seem to me like a DII school after how they got embarrassed trying to poach Gregg Marshall from Wichita State. Everybody but the football coach flew to Wichita on private jets with suitcases full of money; I'm talking the president, the AD, etc. But Alabama's laughable basketball program made it difficult for even a top 5 national basketball coach to think he could have success. They suck so bad that $4 million seemed wayyy too low. I can never have respect for Alabama because of the desperation and total failure they showed in little ol' Wichita, Kansas.

So because of this, Alabama's brand is greatly tainted in my eyes. I would consider Ohio State far superior in branding which obviously doesn't reflect current football championship game success.
