LOSERS

* East Carolina: Some coaching changes are puzzling, a feeling with a tendency to fade if the new coach fares as well or better than his predecessor. When things get worse — a lot worse — in a hurry, it’s easy to keep pointing to an odd decision.

Such is the case with the Pirates. Ruffin McNeill was a commendable 42-34 in six seasons. He is an East Carolina alum. But after posting a 5-7 mark that featured four one-possession losses in 2015, McNeill was ousted.

The Pirates went 3-9 in Scottie Montgomery’s first season, then opened this year with a 34-14 loss to FCS-level James Madison (as an underdog). Saturday, East Carolina lost, 56-20, at West Virginia after trailing 49-3 at the break and doesn’t look like a good bet to even match last year’s win total.

East Carolina: Things are getting ugly quickly in Greenville. It was a pretty big gamble for athletics director Jeff Compher to change coaches a couple years ago, pushing out an alumnus in Ruffin McNeill who had been fairly successful. Ever since then, the Pirates have been flat-out atrocious under Scottie Montgomery and were non-competitive in a 56-20 loss at West Virginia. Traditionally, these are the types of games where ECU is dangerous, but they were simply cannon fodder for West Virginia on Saturday, falling behind 49-3 at halftime. The Pirates are 0-2 and look like one of the worst teams in the American Athletic Conference.

Someone forgot to set the alarm clocks for East Carolina and Baylor. Nice starts. ECU, which inexplicably fired Ruffin McNeill two years ago, is now 3-10 under Scottie Montgomery and has opened the season with a loss to James Madison and a blowout loss to West Virginia.

FWIW, Ruffin McNeill is a position coach at OU.

True but he is also AHC along with Defensive Backs coach & the D-Line did look good even for OU standards against Ohio State. One of the best things about Ruff was his loyalty due to being an ECU grad and being from ENC. This was a destination job for him & that's rare for anyone to have in this conference.

RE: ECU AD Jeff Compher is already breaching contract extension agreement (Link)
Ruff isn't coming back and neither is Riley. Compher made the move to make the program his own. Had Coach Mo won 8 or 9 games last year and 8 or 9 this year, Compher would be trying to leverage that into a better job. - That's why he is bad for ECU. Compher has to go. Mo needs to be sat down and told he has this year and next to turn things around or he is out.

ECU wants to be a 'big boy' school when it comes to football. What do the 'big boy' schools do when something like this happens? They pony up the money and fire the AD and coaches, then pony up again and hire somebody that can get the job done. ECU raised a buttload of money in a very short time for the stadium renovation. Let this season play out as 2-10 or 0-12 and I guarantee EVERY large donor would say yes to re-appropriating that money to get rid of Compher (and likely Mo). ECU doesn't need a nicer press box right now. There's no sense in painting a sinking ship.

Read the part about JC's past jobs. I'm thinking that's how he got the job to begin with & the contract extension. Look at Jeff Compher's first job listed.

It is not a question of need...it is matter of keeping up. Sitting back and allowing everyone we recruit against to upgrade while being complacent could make things worse. College football is a business. Just like any business you have to do what it takes to keep your market share...or suffer loss of it. Its a war. Regardless of whether Mo turns this around and changes everything or he gets canned...the renovation needs to be moved forward to attract better recruits and a better coach if necessary.

The money has been raised...the project approved...every day we put this off the cost go up. This is going to happen anyway. Get it done. BTW...The project also includes other upgrades to the facility outside of the press box that make the program more attractive to recruits.

The question is which is more important for the long term health of the athletic department, the project or cleaning house if this junk continues all season? I don't think both are feasible financially, but if we go 0-12 I don't think the press box is feasible financially either.

What's the reoccurring theme in all of these articles? Ruff Hey I get it. Ruff was not a great coach but he was a good coach. He made some mistakes. Dropped the ball on some of his recruits etc. I get all of that. But you can't deny the fact that the kids loved and played hard for him. That fact alone will help balance out any deficiency in talent that we had. During his tenure here he has done a lot for this school because he loved this school. He should of never been fired after a 5 - 7 season. Jeff Compher made a terrible decision without a backup plan. Hell without a plan at all. If anything he should of waited another year and then pull the trigger. Now we are left with a train wreck of a program that is going to take a while to get back on track.

I'll just say this about Ruff, for all the love the man gets he has had exactly 0 head coaching offers since he was let go from ECU. If the national consensus is we screwed up teams should have been lining up to hire this man, but they weren't.

Besides tearing down the double-wide and making DFS look like a modern stadium:

"Beyond the stadium renovation, the Ward Sports Medicine Building and Scales Field House will also experience improvements as part of the long-term facilities master plan. The football locker room and team meeting areas, athletics training headquarters and equipment room will each undergo a modernization and expansion transformation along with the construction of a football team lounge. The relocation of the ECU Athletics Ticket Office and the addition of team locker rooms will highlight the work scheduled for Scales Field House... At nearby Clark-LeClair Stadium, a hitting facility will be constructed to support both baseball and softball programs." LINK

Yes it is an awful lot of money. But with Compher just getting a 5 year extension, he wont be going anywhere soon. With Mo's contract until 2021, he's likely to get at least another year. As they say on Black Jeopardy, "What we got is what we got." Our best bet is pushing forward on facilities or end up a decade behind our peers.

We are only two games into the season and it ain't looking too good. I'd love to see the Pirates start improving this year and Coach Mo become the greatest coach in ECU history. If he doesn't improve, coaching changes are a fraction of facilities costs.
