Preseason predictions
Since it is after Labor Day, you'll start seeing more college basketball stuff. Just saw my first college basketball magazine today, Athlon.

Their predictions for the CAA were:

1. CofC
2. Towson
3. Elon
4. UNCW
5. Hofstra
6. Northeastern
7. W&M
8. Delaware
9. Drexel
10. JMU

There was a lot of ink about CofC. Pat Skerry says, "IMO, they may be the best team coming back since I've been in the Colonial."

Chealey of CofC was Preseason POY.

First team was Brantley (CofC), Cacok (UNCW), Chealey (CofC), Seibring (Elon), Wright-Foreman (Hofstra).

2nd team was Daly (UD), Dawkins (Elon), Gustys (Hofstra), Morsell (Towson), Riller (CofC).

RE: Preseason predictions
No doubt CofC is the favorite going in. You think Skerry is sandbagging a little, though?

RE: Preseason predictions
For all the years we were underseeded in predictions, this year we're picked fourth?

RE: Preseason predictions
This isn't a bad list IMO. I would go with:

1. CofC
2. Elon
3. Towson
4. UNCW
5. Hofstra
6. W&M
7. Drexel
8. Delaware
9. Northeastern
10. JMU

W&M is a wildcard to me, I can see them doing better but can also see them really struggling. I think NU lost too much and is too young to really compete this season. Drexel and Delaware are marginally better than last season. JMU seems like the obvious choice for worst team. CofC is the clear favorite.

I think it's high for UNCW honestly. New Coach, lost several impact players and one of the best players in the league.

I think our floor is still fairly high, relative to the rest of the league, primarily because of the presence of Cacok. Many of the teams ranked below us have even more significant question marks than we do.

4th sounds about right to me. Even if McGrath just rolls the ball out there we have enough talent to win more than half of our CAA games.

I'm cautiously optimistic. We have seen in the past that we can have talent, but with a crappy coach still stink! I'm not saying he is, or will be, that's to be determined. I just think 4th is a stretch!

It's not a stretch. It's just that there is a fairly wide range of outcomes so no one really knows.

If no one really knows, generally, you don't get placed in the top 4! Listen, i hope it's right i'm just not sure how anyone could make that prediction at this point.

We lost Flemmings, Ingram and Bryce. THREE of the best players in the CAA, not one.

Obviously the impact players in my statement would be those who graduated and "one" would be the one who decided to go elsewhere to ride the pine at a shittay P5.

RE: Preseason predictions
C of C is the team to beat and will win the CAA this year but they aren't as talented as UNCW's team last year. The difference is that the Cougars embrace defense and UNCW didn't. This past year, I don't think there was a mid major or most majors that had the fire power that UNCW had. If the Hawks could defend at all, it would have been over.

This Cougar team has a chance to really be good because they play both ends. If they can begin to score more, they will be a tough out in the NCAA's. That's if they get through the CAA tourney and/or play there way in. UNCW was borderline last year even with a stacked team, so you have to schedule up to prove things. They are the #1 team going in.

UNCW lost more fire power than any team that I can remember. Even with that lost fire power, they still have a tremendous PG in Jordan Talley. A guy that people over look because of all the other guys, but a guy that closed out many a game even as a freshman, can score and simply make plays on both ends-very underrated player. UNCW will have to rely on Jaylen Fornes to be the scorer that everybody close to the program knows that he is. Look for a 3 guard set with the xfer from Wichita State to get into the mix as well plus Richmond, Estime and some of Gary to round out the backcourt. Cacok is a lock and a first teamer in the front court. If they can get another big to step up, UNCW should be competitive. The following year UNCW should be back near the top if they can replace Talley.

RE: Preseason predictions
Lindy's predicts UNCW as 2nd in the CAA.

The order:

Charleston
UNCW
Elon
Towson
Hofstra
JMU
NU
W&M
Drexel
Delaware

Chealey (CofC), Wright-Foreman (Hofstra), Daly (UD), Brantley (CofC), Cacok (UNCW) 1st team.

Kurk Lee (Drexel), Mike Morsell (Towson), Brian Dawkins (Elon), Eli Pemberton (Hofstra), Tyler Seibring (Hofstra) 2nd team.

Wright-Foreman listed as best shooter, Gustys from Hofstra best rebounder, Chealey best playmaker, Begley from NU best defender, Wright-Foreman most versatile, Cacok best draft prospect.

I read that NBA teams don't like big men who can't shoot three-pointers as much as they used to. In 2016-2017, NBA teams attempted 50 percent more three-pointers than six seasons before that. I wanted to compare it to five seasons before, but I didn't because the NBA had a shorter season then.

Developing a jump shot is definitely a key for Cacok.

But not every successful NBA big has a jumpshot. If you can play defense and rebound, you'll find a job. Just look at Kenneth Faried.

Quite right 08. Play defense and rebound and you will find a job. Dennis Rodman is probably the prime example. Teams put up with his quirkiness (to put it mildly) because of his ability to defend & rebound.

Yeah but you have to play defense and rebound at a exceptional level to even make a NBA roster, let alone be great at it.

Faried is one of maybe handful of players like that in the NBA.

A jumper would help his cause and he's only 6'7"...

RE: Preseason predictions
It's a toss up right now as to whether Cacock is NBA level. On the plus side, he is a freak of nature athlete. I heard last year that all he does is "dunk". Ok, if it's that easy, every player should be doing it...right? He can jump out of the gym, he's fast and can run forever.
But, he's only 6'7" and hasn't developed a game outside 3 feet yet.

I'm of the opinion he needs to develop a jump shot and a face up offensive game, where he can drive and finish off the dribble to get to that level.

I would like to see him be the next Antonio Gates, who only played basketball in college.
