There are lots of things to clean up. For a team that's NEVER played together, you HAVE to expect that.
I'm not into moral victories, but I'll spend the year looking for positives, even in losses.
I saw plenty of them.

Had we not gone for it on 4th and 1 in our own territory, I think the score is far more respectable...but I think Coach Clark was trying to send a message to his team that he believes in them. If that message pays off later, I'll accept the more lopsided score

I can't argue with any of that.

Going away from the run and stalling out on the first two drives of the second half killed us. Gotta learn from this and get better. Lots of other sub-100 teams on the schedule to compete against.

Does Coach Clark call our offensive plays or is it the OC?

This team could win games with the old McGee strategy. Damn the passing game. Run every play. 05-stirthepot

I think this team is a Watson Brown special. Capable of winning 10 games, but will only get 5 if they don't get rid of these Watson team habits.

Enjoyed playing UAB. Your crowd was better than ours. I'd love to make a return trip.

We played a real football game! I'm pretty damned excited. I'm only disappointed that I couldn't see it, thanks to the crapulent ESPN3 feed (went to Iron City and finally got tired of trying to guess their passwords as they tried to sign in over and over).

RE: UAB vs. Ball state
We had a freshman RB rush for 151 in our first game back against an FBS opponent. And the running game had a huge question mark on it coming in.

Defense just couldn't get off the field on 3rd down...that was the major issue for us today. But I don't think it was all us. Ball St converted 12 third downs last week, too.

EDIT: And I agree about the ESPN3 issues. I tried on every device in my house that would stream and it was the same on every one. Only compounded the frustration I already was feeling because of 3rd down conversion rates.

RE: UAB vs. Ball state
To put things in some perspective Illinois had 216 total yards against them. We had a very well thought out game plan on offense and Spencer Brown makes the whole offense completely different.

Give BSU credit, I don't know how they do it but they just get it done on 3rd down. We made some mistakes but their guys just made play after play. One thing I did notice is after the first drive is that we changed out of a strictly 3 man front and started stopping the run. They responded by going with more 3 wide sets and I think that gave us some problems.

There are some positives to take away but a LOT to work on this week. i suspect the team that comes out next Saturday will have a different level of focus since this week's practice won't be something they care to repeat.

Les Koenning does. perhaps I now know why other schools wouldn't let him call the offensive plays.

Why we ever throw the ball is a mystery to me.

amen, our 3 back set was killing them in the running game,, and then we have a pass called..time after time this stuff killed drives. Not to mention the penalties after penalty. I think we could have won this game. I finally gave up and left mid 4th quarter so I could get to see UGA vs Notre Dame.

The stadium was about 3/4 full, which means they had around 16K fans there by my assessment. Decent group of UAB fans made the trip. Cant wait to get back to Legion Field for some home cooking.

RE: UAB vs. Ball state
Not happy with the outcome, but did like what I saw. I think what today showed was we definitely have the skill to win games, it's just whether we can be more discliplined than other teams. Guess you could make that point with just about any team, but I feel like that really will be what determines if we win or lose games.

Regardless, I'm glad I made the 2 hour trip to go to the game, and was happy to be amongst quite a few fellow Blazers.

Clean up the penalties and get pressure on a qb. Offense performed admirably.

Defense was having Wayne Bolt flashbacks. I thought our secondary looked bad against A&M and this game confirmed it.

Can't blame the DB's when the opposing QB has an eternity in the pocket on pretty much every throw.

Speaking of defense, I hope Keely is ok. He left in between ESPN3 feed ****-ups and never returned.
