And he is one of the few former OC turned Head Coach that stresses defense.

When analyzing the A&M situation he is perfectly suited to meet their needs. Add to that the fact that he is naturally low key and won't be likely to involve himself in matters extraneous to football which could disrupt the Universities political machinations within the state and I just don't see a downside.

But 10th is right that the Ag boards were talking about the SMU guy which would be a woefully stupid move. A&M will recruit the state of Texas just fine. What they need is somebody who is sharp in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi and has ties to Florida. Again that is Dan Mullen.

Mullen would probably be a good fit although I don't see A&M looking that direction.

Wouldn't shock me though if Tennessee looked at Mullen. Of course, that's assuming Butch Jones doesn't get the job done and we probably won't know for several weeks how that's going to go.

Barring an epic collapse, I think Jones is safe this year. Plus, don't forget that Jones broke the streak against Florida last year. That is still big even if the season didn't end the way it should have.

Obviously everything is still on the table for TN, but there honestly is no game this year that I don't think we have at least a chance in, and that includes Alabama. Of course, we are the cardiac Vols and could crash and burn, but Indiana State, Southern Miss, and UMass get you four wins, and though KY is better, I still count KY and Vandy as expected wins. I could see anything from the Music City Bowl in a rebuilding year to a NY6 12-2 season.

Dude, the Vols incompetence against Tech does not inspire confidence. Beating the Dawgs and Gators last year required miracles. I just think Butch is over his skies and get out coached most of the time

I noted the lack of training that the QB had in ball faking and hand-offs. When you drop back to fake the pass and hand off the ball on a draw you don't stick it out at arms length for the DB's to see. He got his tailback hammered before the guy could get back to the line of scrimmage. The same was true on basic hand-offs on dive plays. It doesn't take long to teach the QB and back how to hide the ball and still make a clean exchange.

When I see things like that I know there are some major coaching gaffs in play.

I was concerned by the inability of our DB's to handle single coverage against a team that throws 12 passes a game

It's a moronic technique that is being taught that accounts for that. Auburn did it too until we got Kevin Steele as a defensive coordinator. They play a detached man to man where they are taught to watch the receivers eyes and hands. Since the receivers no this they reach early and detach by contact and then leap for the ball that is actually coming later than their first move. The defensive back either leaps into them (interference) or stays at arms length which results in catch, and having to run the receiver down. Steele teaches it the way we had to learn it. You run with the receiver until keeping your body between him and the ball thrower. When he makes his move you do too, only turning to face the ball. If you are the safety you keep him in front of you. But since the real athletes play offense in high school none of these DB's have any fundamental training coming into college.

Right now I'm watching Tennessee struggle to stop Georgia Tech's triple option. They're down by a score early in the 4th quarter.

If Butch Jones loses this one then he's on the fast track to the unemployment line.

Dan Mullen

BTW: Tennessee in 20T's on a failed 2pt conversion by Tech. Going into week #2 the SEC is 3-0 vs the ACC.

Love that we pulled out the win, but think GT beat themselves. The ACC is 0-1 against itself.

Your right - Tech beat themselves with 2 turnovers for touch downs, and 2 missed field goals. The holder looked like he was too close to the line on that last blocked field goal. Anyway good win for Tennessee. 04-cheers

Agree the end of that game was a disaster, but TAM did lose their QB and another starter in the game, and the backup QB was horrible. Doesn't excuse the defense from giving up 35 points from the end of the 3rd quarter on though. Sumlin was on the hot seat going into the season so unless he does a drastic turn around for the remainder of the season he probably is toast. Jones is probably safe for another season with 7 or more wins and a bowl victory. 07-coffee3

Yeah there's no turn around.

This season and staff are done.

All we can do is hope the next guy is better but probably not given our idiot hiring practices

I literally watched this game twice…. I couldn’t believe what happened the first time that I saw it. It was subsequently aired again, so I watched it from a different perspective. Yes… The fault for this epic loss was a direct result of failed coaching that allowed a team to play a little over a quarter like the game was already won—which gave UCLA hope and an unbelievable victory. Moreover, when his defense (that gave up 4 TD’s and almost 300 passing yards in one quarter) was literally wilting on UCLA’s last scoring drive, he didn’t call a timeout. In fact, I never saw him call a timeout during UCLA’s entire comeback and YELL at the team. A coach will usually try this fundamental tactic at least once to convey the urgency of the situation. I never saw any sense of urgency from A&M during UCLA’s comeback. Consequently, he should be fired along with his entire staff if A&M doesn’t have a productive season after suffering an unnecessary and devastating loss.

Even if Sumlin goes 9-3 or 10-2 this year, fans will still want him out?

Half of the SEC West might be getting ready to replace head coaches with all the flaming pitch forks floating around these last two weekends.

Texas A&M: Kevin Sumlin blew a huge, huge lead on the road. BOT member posted on Facebook that he would vote to fire him now if the process began today

Arkansas: Brett has been terribly inconsistent. This loss with a new defense and an offense that can't convert in the red zone, even missing two field goals.

Auburn: the wheels on the Gus Bus may have fallen off with the fan reactions to losing to Clemson this weekend. The Auburn defense played great, but the offense was embarrassing

Ole Miss: High Freese fired in the middle of the summer after Houston D Nutt brought to light in a defamation lawsuit that coach freese was using University resources to provide hookers to recruits.

Gonna be a wild coaching search for sure

Dan Mullen works well at Auburn too. We'd keep the DC Steele and replace Gus with Dan.

Ok if that happened he'd be safe

But we just did our damndest to lose to a D3 team this past Saturday. This staff and team have already quit. I can only see us winning a max of 6 games this season with the very real possibility of only winning 4-5

This is a bad team that has already given up.

I can't condemn the team 10th. They showed the potential to have handled UCLA. The difference was there was no attempt to make counter adjustments after UCLA made their adjustments. Sumlin and staff have yet to show an ability to think on the fly. And if anyone looked like a deer caught in the headlights it was Sumlin in the 4th quarter.

And I agree this team quit in game 2. If thy do that this Saturday La Lafayette will hang a loss on you. But it is the job of the coach to keep the players motivated.

So I find ample fault with your coach and staff. But the talent on the field is capable of 9 wins, IMO.

That might be true if we had a viable replacement QB who can complete a pass and more than one WR capable of catching them but we just don't so our O is too limited this year

But you're correct that 90% of the fault is on the staff. A Pewee coach could have preserved that win against UCLA by just remembering fundamental football 101 and sticking with the run game and not snapping the ball till the 5 second mark.

No arguments there at all. It was the most incompetent display of coaching I've seen, although Gus can come close at times.
