Initial thoughts from opening weekend
USM: lost the turnover battle again, played bad special teams, and still almost won. Should have won this one.

MTU: Vanderbilt totally shut you down. Shutdown what was supposed to be an offensive juggernaut. Stockstill called it a "mismatch". Vandy might be good.

Charlotte: Keep building.

UAB: Might have a decent defense to build around. Lots of TFLs. 45k SHOWED UP! OMG! HOW DID YOU DO THAT???

ODU: Yuck. Nice defense, but those offensive numbers are pretty bad.

Marshall: Got some breaks in a hard-fought win. Hopefully the start of something big. NCSU will be an interesting measuring stick.

UNT: outclassed their opponent. Needed blowout in the building process. SMU, your next opponent, did the same thing. You need to beat them to be taken seriously in-state, and to send them spiraling.

La Tech: passing stats are mediocre. NWSU is not a bad FCS program, but they hung around too long. Good warm-up for MSU though.

WKU: stats aren't too pretty, but you shut down their running game. The Illini barely beat Ball State. You'll need to play better to beat them.

Rice/UTEP: that tunnel is dark.

FIU/FAU: hey, there's a light!

UTSA: better luck next week, against Baylor, which lost to Liberty!

RE: Initial thoughts from opening weekend
Tech looked really sloppy for the first 3 quarters. We gave the demons a lot of possessions with great field position due to turnovers. In the forth quarter it seemed like the offense had an eureka moment and started to gel. I don't think we'll score like we did last year but the defense will be better. We got lots of pressure on the QB and looks like we'll generate turnovers. Probably gonna be a 7 win team at best.

WKU was off -- was it new coach jitters or signs of something more serious? We will find out next week.

Vandy is good.

RE: Initial thoughts from opening weekend
Hard to make any kind of an assessment from games against FCS opponents. Even with the gifted fumbles inside the 5, Tech's defense looked lost on several occasions unfortunately nothing new

I think Marshall had the best win and is moving in the right direction.

USM and MTSU games against the doormat east teams was disappointing but I think Vandy will be decent this year.

The blowout losses to two G5 schools, Navy and UCF, tampers the expectations of some the F_U homer fans.

Charlotte still has way to go.

Rice and UTEP both played top ten teams, not unexpected.

Nice crowd for UAB

IMO it's too soon to throw Rice and UTEP out the window. Both teams played competition that was way better than anyone else in C-USA played. Since Rice is at UTEP this week, we still won't know how they stack up with the rest of the conference. Both could be really bad or both might still surprise a few teams.

I totally agree by far the best teams played. I would be more worried about losing to doormat east team at home

1) Hmmm....was it Vandy or UK who had a good win in a pretty nice bowl last year?

2) Sure, Miami is a great win when it has (FL) at the end of it! 04-cheers

Well, I'll take beating an FBS bowl team over losing to a basketball school everyday.

Not to mention that not so great Miami team lost on a last second fg to Miss state in a bowl...AND had 17 returning starters.... don't tell me it wasn't a good win because that's just not true.

While ODU didnt look good, three quarters of the game was in a bad rain storm. Hard to play well in those conditions.

Charlotte had perfect conditions against Eastern Michigan and got blown out.

Seems pretty huge when it was the only FBS win our conference had the entire week. Not saying they're a great team, but not discounting a solid win either.

We played poorly, no doubt. Losing by 17 is hardly being blown out.

RE: Initial thoughts from opening weekend
If USM hadn't started and played that inept QB for the whole 1st half, they would have won that game easily. Had Griggs started, UsM would have beat the hell out of Kentucky. Heck, had be played 3 quarters we would ave beat them easily.

In short, if our dumb*** coach starts Griggs the rest of the year, we will cut through CUSA like a hot knife through butter. Everything else is in place or will fall into place, with Griggs at QB. I'll give our coach credit for that and may even stop calling him a dumb***, but that decision to start and play Keon so longs is something that is just about unforgivable.

This team is as close to a "normal" USM team as I've seen in a long time (well, Monks last year was pretty close). Glad this conference full of newbs is about to finally get a good taste of it.

Unfortunately, if we go 13-1 / 12-2 / or even 11-3, we may be looking for a new coach again and back to Suckville.

Glad at least some one is feeling very confident after their first game. UNT/UTSA might have something to say about that when you step into conf play.
