Just got showered and rehydrated after game
My impressions from The Coliseum:

It was fricking hot: Felt like I had just played four quarters after walking out of the Coliseum, so can't imagine how the players felt. The heat affected both teams in the fourth, especially on defense, but USC just had that extra edge to pull it out.

We're good: heard nothing but compliments and the utmost respect from USC fans I sat around and encountered after the game. It wasn't the usual P5 "Oh, we played horrible" response. Everyone was truly impressed with how we matched up against them and they felt fortunate to have had just a little more gas than us at the end to finish us off. Totally caught me off guard, really. A couple Trojans mentioned that they thought that might be our lone loss this season and will be rooting for us, and I hope they are right. USC fans=super classy.

Bronco nation represented: great turnout by WMU fans - I'd say around 5,000 in attendance. Was a great opportunity for us west coast Broncos and of course we were into it. I don't know if the "Let's go Broncos" chants in the second half could be heard on the telecast but they echoed through the stadium and were loud. Hope we can schedule some more west teams in the future (San Diego St?).

Coaching staff was excellent: I thought this coaching staff was good and had a chance to be better than the last, and so far I still believe that. Totally out coached USC. Getting the guys re-energized and ready for MSU after this brutal game will tell a lot. But today, they were prepared with a great game plan and ready to play.

Passing game improvement: Expect it to improve week to week from here on out. If it's clicking next Saturday and we are recovered from USC and ready to play, we will beat MSU. Comfortably, in my opinion.

Defense: Awesome, as expected. Only going to get better from here on out. Don't blame them at all for just getting too gassed at the end, because they played their fricking hearts out and, for a good chunk of that game, dominated.

OL and RBs: Maybe the best we've ever had here. Dominant. Nothing earns you respect faster than lining up and just pounding it down the field. And we did that all day long.

Now time for one more bottle of water and then pass out. Proud to be a Bronco.

Way to represent. Good to get a first hand account. I had just watched a few of the Gators in JerryWorld go down with cramping issues. and I thought that if a team from Florida was feeling it indoors how would we perform in near 100 degree heat. Our trainers and conditioning coaches earned their keep, the team looked fast, played hard the whole game. Didn't see as many of our guys go out cramping up. No doubt they will be ready for MSU.

I got the same impressions from Badger fans following the game in Dallas. On the way out of the stadium and on the flight home.

There were a ton of heat related issues going on in the crowd. Paramedics were pretty much constantly rolling people out of the stadium on stretchers. It was that brutal.

Awesome recap.

I haven't looked at "participation" in the box score.

Did you see much rotation on defense?

Did any true freshmen besides the kicker see action?

There was a lot of rotation on defense. Two-deep was fully utilized. Freshmen that saw action were LB Hayward, DE Fayad, WR Sanders. Goddard played the last few snaps in garbage time.

Good summation. Man it was hot. Luckily we drenched ourselves in sunscreen and chugged water all day.

Team looked really well coached and ready. I'm not surprised it was competitive but I am surprised we had a real chance that deep into the game. If Wassink had a couple starts under his belt maybe it goes differently.

That being said it was essentially over when USC figured out they could run the ball more or less at will. The secondary looked GREAT against a Heisman frontrunner; defensive line, less so. But thats not so much a knock on us. Anyway this secondary is going to be tough against everyone else we play.

There's a real chance to go 12-1 with this team, depending on how the passing game develops.

I sat in the opposite end zone from where most WMU fans were but the experience with (most) USC fans was the same. Surprisingly knowledgable and any trash talk was in good fun. Way better than UM or MSU fans.

Postgame from Lester:

Quote:On the heat and if it was a factor
“It was 60 most mornings in Kalamazoo. Lucky for us, thanks to our administration we were able to come out Wednesday. We practiced in it Thursday and Friday and it helped us. We were a lot more comfortable early on in the game. Thursday in the walk through our guys faces were like “wow”. Lucky we could get acclimated and it helped us. We we literally rotating every play at the end. We were trying to keep guys upright and I think we ran out of juice and missed some tackles at the end. You can’t play 56 minutes. You’ve gotta play 60.

I signed up a week ago, but had to wait till today to be cleared by the moderators. I'm not a trash talker at all, Trojan since the 60s and female. Of course, your moderators didn't know that.

Just wanted to pass on tips to deal with the heat and invite those that wanted friendly conversation with the opposing fans, to our tailgate for breakfast burritos, carne asada with all the fixings, salads, fruit and dessert. We had four top ups and three big screens. You came a long way.

It is a good 10 degrees hotter in the stadium than outside it....no shelter from the sun, the heat settles in the bowl and stays there. A bag of ice in the clear bag, with a small spray bottle to fill with the melting water is very refreshing, also those neck towels that remain cool, are a must. A tip learned from our Mexican brothers that work out in the fields is, a loose, thin white cotton hoodie shield you from the sun. May not look fashionable, but you survive that oppressive heat.

Thank you so much for joining us in celebrating a great young man (Jake) and allowing him to live his childhood dream, it was a class act by your coaches and players.

Thank you, and if any of you are out this way, or live in Southern California, you are more than welcome to come and join our tailgate and watch games all day,and eat some great food. You can wear your colors proudly and be treated with respect.

Thanks for stopping by. FWIW I'm pretty sure its the site wide mods and not the WMU board that approves you. Too bad they were slow.

RE: Just got showered and rehydrated after game
I had to take a couple of showers after that game!

I was in row (Row?) ok, Section 25... in the upper seats, right behind the student section (folks in the first row of the upper section left in the 3rd quarter and left their seats to us! So we watched the entire second half with great seats!

There were maybe 5 or so scattered Broncos in Second 25 with me, a couple rows back... and we acknowledged each other with some Bronco love after each score!

I had a 3 year old in tow, and we had to walk around the entire stadium before we could find our entrance (we had special passes, because my daughter's mother has a nephew who's being heavily recruited by a number of schools -- including Michigan -- but after today, I'm hoping he'll give serious consideration to come to K-Zoo to play with Coach Lester! I'm sure we could use a speedy DB!!)

But I digress...

Back to the experience!

Like all of us, I've seen The Colosseum countless times on TV, but it's so much different being there!

It is a historic stadium and you could tell after walking through the tunnel to the stands that special things have happened there. You could just feel the history. Reminded me of walking into Tiger Stadium for the first time.

USC fans were great! Great Marching Band too! But I couldn't help but think that The BMB would have seriously matched them note-for-note! Seriously!! The only thing our band doesn't have is a dude walking around in a skirt with a sword.

Back to the fans... sat in front of a long time USC fan and graduate... like me he was also in Marching Band... Big fella, and he played flute. We had a great conversation about bands, life, football, women, all that! Great guy.

Oh, did I say it was hot?

It was really oppressive!

The big thermometer on the far side of the stands (to the right of the big Olympic flame) was pointing PAST 100 degrees!

My new USC buddy gave me a bag of ice to put on the back of my neck... it helped.

It was great talking to USC fans about Western, last year's historic season, Kalamazoo, Detroit, Michigan... life... all that! Really sat around a great group of people who genuinely had respect for me, our team and our institution!

In fact every time we scored (and as you know we scored a lot) I would turn around at the sea of red and ask ("Any one? Any love for the guy wearing Brown?) A little bit of hissing and ribbing, but it was all in good fun!

In the third quarter is was apparent to me, and the fans around me that we could really win this thing!

You could hear a pin drop when Darius ran back that kickoff for a 100 yard touchdown!

In our new seats closer to the field, there was a dude in a Bronco hat two seats away from me! That was the moment I lost my voice screaming and that was the moment I literally jumped in to that fellow Bronco's arms!

I mean WOW!!

The headline in the LA Times says it best: "USC has to work hard to put away Western Michigan"

There were a number of special memories at that game (that even the LA Times suggests we would have run if it wasn't for USC's freshman running back... he was good) we were good too! But the moment of the game was watching USC's blind long snapper take a ceremonial (but real) snap for an extra point. That was breathtaking for every fan in attendance

It took me until the 4th quarter to realize that Bronco nation was seated (several hundred strong) in the stands right across from me! For those of you at the game, we could DEFINITELY hear you shouting LET'S GO BRONCOS throughout the entire stadium!!! That gave me goose bumps!!

The entire world knows USC was on upset alert until the very end of the game!

The entire world knows Sparty best be prepared next week!

The entire world knows the culture has changed at WMU!!

If post game hugs and hi-fives are any indication, our Broncos have gained some SERIOUS points on the respect-o-meter!

Hats off to ANYONE who attended yesterday's game! It was truly too hot to be outside for two hours!

Hats off to Coach Lester and the ENTIRE team for a damn good showing! I don't like moral victories either, but in my opinion, this is the definition of one! I don't think we're 0-1 on the season, more like 0-.5) We should get at least 1/2 a win for this one! Number 4 team in the nation was ABSOLUTELY on the ropes! There's no denying it!

Hats off to ALL OF US!!

It truly is A Great (and sweaty) Day To Be A Bronco!

GO BRONCOS! BEAT SPARTY!!

(best Trojan band moment, the UCLA Sucks cheer!!)
(best moment for me, hearing LET'S GO BRONCOS echo throughout the stadium)

Seats were old and dingy, but comfortable... that's quite a place! And it could get loud!!!!

So glad I was there!

I know many of you were there with Bronco Nation in spirit!

Let's show the world that yesterday wasn't a fluke... we held serve with the #4 ranked team and their Heisman candidate QB!

Let's Beat Sparty!!

RE: Just got showered and rehydrated after game
Oh, do I think we could have won if Coach Fleck was at the helm? Probably not! But I don't think we would have had those bad back-to-back false start penalties, that killed us! But it's hard to predict. Maybe PJ would have been more conservative in his play calling.. maybe he would have gone with Flacco instead of Wassink... Who knows. Wassink showed some serious guts yesterday... When i told the USC fans around me that this game was his first collegiate start, they couldn't believe it! So much fun!! If only we could have had Sparty in our FIRST game, then USC in week 2!! But let's just make this 2017 Bronco special!! (it already is!!)

GO BRONCOS!!
