I'm just thrilled that we have a coach that realizes that you can make halftime adjustments....

He could have been in an on-job interview. ECU may fire Coach Montgomery if he can't pull an upset win to offset this embarrassment tonight. If he is fired, guess who looks really good to Jeff Compher?
Mike Houston looks kinda good for ECU and any other FBS program in his home state of North Carolina. If JMU continues to hold its pecker instead of moving up, he will have too many offers to count.

If we have the season we are capable of having and win another Championship everyone is going to come calling. And if NC State fires Dave Doeren at the end of this season (he was on the hot seat at the end of last year) we may just look across the field next fall at Coach Houston in Red and White...

Listening to the post game radio show for ECU was hysterical. One of the hosts said "even the JMU band kicked our bands a$$.

Every single caller wanted to clean house from the Chancellor through Coach Mo.

This was straight out truth. The MRDs made ECU look like a junior band. The halftime show with "Get it on" and ending with the JMU fight song was the highlight of the evening. Watching some ECU folks clap along and cheer for the fight song (no words) was priceless :)

The count down is on, all we can do is enjoy a football coach with a plan one more season.

I was in grad school at ECU in the mid-'90s and this is their MO. They hype themselves into the stratosphere in the offseason and call for heads to roll during the season. Like us in men's basketball, except that we know we're going to suck in the offseason.

Mike Houston would be an idiot to take the ECU job. State or another power conference job should be the next step. This guy is the real deal. If he's patient for a year or two, he can just slide over to UVA when they fire Bronco.

^ thats nauseating

Serious question... whoever organized the fbs pledge.. do we need to look at shifting that to a HCMH retention bonus next year? Alpha dogs to match?

I think Coach Houston waits for UNC job, which he would leave JMU for no matter what peripheral FBS conference we could have been in. He was hanging with Roy Williams before UNC game last year. They are both from Asheville. He is elite and I am enjoying the ride while he is here. Go Dukes.

I wouldn't trade our staff for anyone. Anyone.

I think he sticks around for at least another year or two. Say what you want about "but a million dollars is a million dollars", but...that million dollars (and then some) will still be there in a couple years. If he can stay here and win another couple championships while waiting for a top 25 FBS school to come calling, why not...a non-P5 team I don't think will be enough to draw him away. The competitor in him definitely wants to stick around to beat State, WVU, etc.

Also, he's a family man and I have a feeling his wife has been pissed about having to move over and over again. Moving for anything less than a top job means, again, the prospect of moving a couple more years down the road. He's still pretty young...no need to rush up the ladder if the jobs will still be there in a few years.

Depending how this year and the next shake out, I don't think he's going to have to hop from job to job. He's the guy that takes leaps. In just 6 years he took a D2 to finals, turned Citadel around to beat a P5, and polished off the best team in FCS. Even if some of that was right time/right place his mojo is becoming legend.

He can end up skipping the G5 route altogether and turning around a lower P5. He may be better off staying a bit longer at JMU with high success rather than getting stuck on the side of the road with the wrong re-building G5 program. Might be interested in going through a full cycle of recruits and graduate some players vs keep being a troubleshooting specialist. All the coaching magic in the world isn't going to overcome undesirable schools, unstable administrations, or poor resources. He's going to be in the rare place of getting to be selective. I'd love to see him end up at Notre Dame.

RE: Better Poll: Mike Houston
Houston’s going to get plucked from us at some point. Here’s my take on the possibilities:

First, he’s not moving directly to a TOP job. They may be down the road, but he’s not moving directly to Penn State, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, etc.

Secondly, he’s not moving out of his recruiting territory for his next job. There’d be no reason for a lower-P5 job Purdue, Iowa, Miss St, Mizzou, Kansas, Boston College, etc. to consider him. He just doesn’t have the recruiting contacts in that area. And he’s not going to go take a G5 job across the country. That makes no sense.

I don’t see him moving for an incremental pay increase. To me, that’s anything < $1,000,000. He’s got the talent to land a 7-figure job, so I don’t see him taking a 6-figure one.

I see his next job coming from a high-level G5 or a low-level P5 in one of the following states because he knows the territory and has family connections: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky.

So in these states, the following are too premier for his next job: Clemson, Georgia, Penn State, and Tennessee. Just not gonna happen.

Then there are schools where the pay increase is “incremental” and I just don’t think he’d uproot his family knowing that an even better job is out there. Here they are with the money each school is paying their 2016 head coach: Georgia Southern (500K), App State (525K), Georgia State (540K), ODU (570K), UNCC (600K), Marshall (765K), WKU (800K), Mid-Tenn State (800K). He’s better than these jobs.

Then there are 2 schools in the 1M range that he might take if offered: ECU ($1M), Temple ($1M). I bet he’d take ECU, but turn down Temple because of location.

Then there are the Big Dogs….geographically suitable (but not perfect), huge salary. Every one of these is a no-brainer. I bet he’d be on radar at most of these schools, but not necessarily the leading candidate: West Virginia ($2.9M), Memphis ($1.8M), Pitt ($1.8M), Louisville ($3.9M), Kentucky ($3.5M), and Rutgers ($2.0M). These schools are a possibility, but unlikely.

Finally, we have the DREAM schools. I personally hope that he lands at one of these, and I hope it happens in like 2-4 more years after a few more National Championships. Huge salary, geographically perfect. He’ll be on the short list for any vacancy at these schools in 1-2 years and I’d wish him well if he goes. All pay between $2.0M and $3.3M: UVA ($3.3M), VT ($3.2), South Carolina ($3.0M), GT ($2.9M), Vandy ($2.6), Maryland ($2.4), Duke ($2.3), Wake ($2.1), Navy ($2.0), and UNC ($2.0)

RE: Better Poll: Mike Houston
If he does get plucked, I just ask that he do what Craig Bohl did at NDSU and agree to join a team, but not until your current team's season is over. NDSU fans were pissed but then he went and still won a third straight title with them on his way out, so it was hard for them to be too upset. His replacement just kept it going for five in a row.

I'd like to see that happen at JMU. We don't skip a beat.
