RE: Game Day: Charlotte
Final defensive stats:

7 points
280 total yards
114 passing/166 rushing
13 1st downs
5/16 3rd down conversions

Hoying the MVP. I told you guys he was a playmaker. Pick 6 and multiple other passes defended/almost picked.

Of the 166 rushing yards, 101 was from the QB, and probably 70 of those were on 2 designed runs in the first half. DCoordinator made adjustments and that play went nowhere in the second half.

Couple passes given up 1st half were the same defender, to be unnamed, mostly a backup. The QB was an athlete, not really a QB, so tough game to really get a read on the pass D.

Tons of guys rotated at all positions. The 2 new Juco DT's who should be really good, mostly didn't play. Apparently LaBarbera got sick and didn't suit up, Kelly got nicked up and only had a few reps. This is why Hendricks got a lot more reps. All will continue to rotate when healthy. Valasti, while gaining an extra year of eligibilty, apparently has to still sit the first 4 or 5 games. Even when ready, expect Maclean & Holford to take most of the backup reps, just like we saw today.

7 points is 7 points. Overall did what they were supposed to do against an inferior team. Much, much, much bigger challenge against Rutgers. Assume they will try to get physical and establish the run against us early. With our depth and size going to have to man up and slow down the run first, which we should be able to do. Probably see more Rachwal because of his size, and Hoying going to have to make some tackles in the run game.

Yep.

Once we shut down the QB keeper the game was essentially over.

I never really thought the game was in doubt (for most of it).

Just like Bolt running one of his prelim races. Do what one needs to win the race but don't 'leave it all on the track...'

RE: Game Day: Charlotte
We had three turnovers on their end of the field: a fumble, a pick, and TOD. If we cash in even two of those (especially the opening drive...we were moving right along), then our outlook on the game is a bit different.

We were vanilla as ever in the 2nd half, and as Steve mentioned, the game never really felt close after the break. Charlotte's offense is predicated on the QB being able to run, but we did a great job shutting it down after their early score. Only disappointing thing to me was the run blocking/playcalling. Lots of ramming Shaq up the middle, instead of trying to figure out ways to get him in space. I hope that changes in the coming weeks.

I guess I'm not as worried as some. It could've very easily been 31-7 at half, and we would all be singing a different tune. I expect our veteran bunch to clean up the mistakes and be ready for a tough, but winnable game in Piscataway.

While I agree a few caveats: consider that Charlotte had two drives in our territory that they blew up themselves by having two 15 yard penalty called that killed both drives. Also we had one pass interference call that saved a TD when the ball hit the defender's helmet.

Our offense looks more suspect when you consider our defense gave them the ball 3 times.
