I just find it mathematically interesting how the distribution of tv markets and conference teams seem to be represented in preseason polls.

I expect the Notre Dame market...er, i mean team to make the top 25 next week.

But yeah, I am

give me a break. Of this weeks top 25, only 1(Texas) didn't win I think it was 8 games last year..... So it doesn't have a damn thing to do with markets.

Auburn was very incomplete tonight. The defense played like a top 5 defense. The offense sputtered like an old engine with bad plugs that needed valve work. But I bet you we are top 10 next week just so the Clemson game can be billed as a top 10 tilt.

Every year they load up the Big 10 and SEC schools in the top 15 so that attrition will leave them 2 of the top 5 heading into the CFP selection process and that's all about markets. Yep, they'll rank N.D. so that the game with Georgia has national appeal and most importantly so they can gross a higher ad rate for the game.

ESPN will breath a bigger sigh of relief if Stanford hangs in there out West and if T.C.U. loses. With Baylor already gone that leaves Oklahoma to battle the Pokes for a possible slot.

It's why they wanted Auburn and Alabama playing Clemson and Florida State. Not only do they make their revenue up front but attrition makes sure that there is no controversy in November because 2 of them will likely have two losses.

I wish I was still a true believer in the fairness of it all, but the process is supposed to tie in 4 different regions of the country by the time selection Sunday rolls around. That way the ad rates are maxed out in the semis and everyone watches the finals anyway.

RE: SEC Dominance
or maybe just maybe the SEC and Big Ten are that good. Ohio St being 38-4 in the last 3 years plus has something to do with why they're ranked so highly. FSU being 33-8 in same period(and that's not taking into account 2013). Clemson is 39-5. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with attrition. It's easy to rank Alabama and Clemson and Ohio St really highly because of what they've done in the recent years.

Auburn won't be top 10 next week. They were #12 in AP- and above them Michigan looked pretty damn good. Behind them LSU looked pretty good- as did Stanford last week.

Texas you can see being ranked with the excitement of a new coach who had done well in Houston before very quickly.

The other 24 teams were all good last year. Doesn't have a damn thing to do with markets.

Wait ... you are saying that a pre-season poll is not based on solid evidence.

Whew, damn good thing I was sitting down there, I might have collapsed in shock from the news.

After this week, it looks like the headline could be extended to "SEC dominance over the ACC", but that too will get a second test in the last week of the regular season.

The pre-season poll is always a crap shoot, given that the best programs from the year before typically lose a lot of one or both sides of the line, so the voters are guesstimating how well they will reload.

Here's two other pieces of football lore to go along with it ... the first game is not always representative of the whole season, and sometimes defenses develop faster than offenses. While FSU will take a tumble in the polls next week, until we have final word on how serious the injury is, we can't rule out FSU climbing their way back up over the season. They might even get a shot at a rematch.

Well, Texas being easy to hype is partly to do with markets, but that still makes is only 4% of the poll
