I'm surprised the state hasn't invested in UIC to make it a Big Ten quality institution in terms on academics and enrollment, especially at the undergraduate level.

Great hire for the Flames. Steve McClain has really helped turn things around in the short time he has been there.

Disappointedly, college basketball in Illinois - until Northwestern's run last year - has been fairly weak in recent years. Illinois has been down. DePaul has consistently been down. UIC wasn't doing anything. Neither was ISU/NIU or Southern. With the recruiting area in Illinois, there should always be at least one team in the tournament every year.

The state of Illinois hasn't invested in any of its public institutions. The University of Illinois system has been moving toward a quasi-private funding model in the same way that Michigan and UVA have done in recent years.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for UIC since my parents met there as students and my father worked there for three decades. Its graduate programs are actually fairly strong, particularly in the the STEM areas. It's closer to the AAU metrics than a lot of the P5 schools that currently aren't members. The quality of the undergrad student body over the years has improved at UIC and it's in a trending upward area of Chicago (the West Loop), so it's getting more residential students. If anything, the demand for residential housing is outstripping supply (which is also occurring at DePaul). There's simply very little school spirit there, though. UIC is definitely a "I'm here to work to get my degree and then I'm going home" type of place without the same level of social activities that you'd see at the flagship University of Illinois campus.

UIC went something like 22-5 in the late 90s. MCC got 3 teams in. UIC and Detroit Mercy earned at-large bids.

Butler was the other team. Was a high water mark for the Conference. Jimmy Collins soon thereafter for some reason lost the confidence of the Chicago Public School coaches and eventually lost control of his team. The UIC program spiraled out of control and into the abyss of losing. Collins wasn't fired because of the relationship his wife had with Dean Barbara Henley, who was over Jim Schmidt and the Athletic Department. Now the AD reports directly to the Chancellor.

UIC looks as if the ship has been righted and is headed in the right direction. Dee Brown is still well known and well liked in Chicago. He should be able to help get some good talent to The Flames.
