RE: What is the projected attendance for the opener?
At this point 5 people could show up, we paid our money to field this team. If no one shows up, it doesn't matter because I've paid thousands of dollars to make up for Ray Watts incompetence (either as a true leader or as a program assassin, pick one. He can't do either right). How many tickets does the $40 or 50 million or whatever has been raised represent?

A great post by 58-56! Going by the seating chart (available tickets), the crowd is going to be very good. Top-5 all time, for sure.........maybe even a record, who knows?

The Watzi narrative is to make this about attendance, as if Ray and Junior and Finis somehow are proven right if fewer than X number of people show at Legion Field. (And make no mistake, the number is X - whatever the totals, real or falsified by Fumbles at Ray's order, the Watzis will declare that it should have been more).

The story is not about attendance. The story is how real people stood against an evil combine of state and corporate power, one that had not lost at anything since 1865, and smacked them in the nose.

The story is Mitch Miller giving the Blazer oath. The story is Tim Alexander speaking to every city council of every 23-person village in central Alabama. The story is a pack of band nerds serenading Ray Watts until he confiscated their tubas and had to take a helicopter to work. The story happened in the hallways of State House, it happened in the parking lot outside the ancient dentist's office, it happened in the Faculty Senate, it happened in the dark back alleys of the national media where Kaleidoscope alums fought the planet's supposed top crisis-management firm and won the day.

Attendance doesn't matter. The score doesn't matter. What matters is that UAB will play football on Saturday in defiance of the racist shadow power structure that has foiled social progress in this state for 152 years. And we made it happen. Not boosters. Not athletic administrators. Not politicians. We fought for our city and our university and we won.

We earned this. We defied all of the odds, we defied every obstacle they threw at us. We were given nothing: we took this day.

The attendance figure that matters? One. As long as one of us is there, we won. Clay Ryan, Ray Watts, Paul W. Bryant Jr. - all of you, and your Sard-Verbinnen and Direct Communications mercenaries, your low-wage troll farms and your University Alumni Association - you lost. You had every advantage, and you lost. You had money, you had power. We had belief.

This is our day. This is our city. This is our game.

This is the most powerful post I have read on this board in my 7-8 years of lurking here. 04-cheers

Spann now says...

FRIDAY: It now looks like a slot of dry air will work into Alabama, and showers/storms Friday should be widely scattered, and much of the day will be dry with a partly sunny sky. The high will be in the low to mid 80s.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: Looks mostly rain-free for Alabama and much of the Deep South as Harvey continues to lift away. Mostly sunny warm days, fair pleasant nights Saturday through Sunday. Highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s. Cooler pockets could see 50s Sunday morning.

Weather is trending the right direction. Hopefully it won't rain during the Sam Hunt event on Friday either.

The anger about attendance threads here is so odd. It's like you guys are actively hoping for low attendance numbers.

A good showing only helps the argument that a new BJCC stadium would be good for Birmingham, so I hope there is a good turnout.

RE: What is the projected attendance for the opener?
even though would love to know how many have purchased tickets.. worry if it becomes a huge talking point that it will be the standard the rest of the season is held to (would be nice).. but dont want to hear first game attendance was just a fluke, couldnt be maintained etc. (its an instate competitor close enough for them to attend, everyone is making a special effort to attend).. attendance prior to shut down really wasnt that bad in 2014

Not interested in projected attendance myself, but we did have around 30,000 for the last A&M game. This should be more.

No, it is not. Any time anyone brings up UAB Football, you are seconds away from hearing a joke about our two fans or being outdrawn by high schools or having to pay people to come to games or inflating attendance numbers by 10,000 or more... it was the reason given for not considering the 2011 stadium proposal... no program's attendance is scrutinized or ridiculed more than ours, and I really wish UAB haters would shut up about it.

It's also a battle we can't really win. How many people is enough?

Or a negative Nancy could say a good turnout shows that Legion Field isn't so bad after all. Why build a new stadium when they're happy in the one they already have?

UAB has also had to deal with purposely under-inflated attendance counts in the past being used as a weapon against us. The whole attendance issue has a history and so a lot of UAB fans are overly sensitized to it.

Being overly sensitive about it is absolutely how I'd describe it. I mean, this thread wasn't threatening in any way, but people are all over it. If this wasn't the reaction, would people harp on it so much?

Sounds like the weather is going to be great. Hope the city, even those who haven't paid a lot of attention to UAB in the past, shows up to support the program. I know all the ole UAB fans will be there. Looking forward to hearing & seeing you back on the field.

The cheapest seats on the ticket sites are $36, which is positive. I'm not familiar with which side is home or away, but the side opposite the press box (31 - 41) only has seats in section 37. The press box side has seats in most sections available.

Edit - Just pulled out my tickets and noticed they are in Section 9, so it looks like Alabama A&M is bringing a big group unless UAB fans are being sold tickets on both sides. Hope you guys aren't out drawn fan wise. I'll be there cheering for you.

Thank you so much. You can get $20 and $30 tickets at the UAB Ticket Office in Bartow Arena. I picked up three for some friends of mine to be there for The Return...

RE: What is the projected attendance for the opener?
I would be willing to bet that attendance for this game will be close to double our season average in 2014, Bill Clark's first season. Attendance that year doubled that attendance for McGee's last season, which was gag a maggot bad.

Whatever the number is, there will be trolls on Al.com saying that it was so low that it proves that no one cares. Well, we just built our first dedicated football building since the program started, and the only way we got to that was to build it with our *own* money.

We care.

UAB Football has won as soon as the ball is kicked off on Saturday, no matter what the attendance is.

Screw the UA BoT and their toady, Ray Watts. The UAB fans and the city of Birmingham got it done, and done right.

I agree with you, and I've been a UAB fan for quite a while now. Attendance IS important. That doesn't mean that it hasn't been overblown or falsely used against us in the past. It's definitely worth asking and talking about. I'll have a lot of pride in UAB and its fans when we have a massive crowd on Saturday.

I guess I just don't get so worked up about it like everyone else.

Our attendance for basketball has been REALLY bad for quite a while.
