I noticed our LB's were often too upright and not even attempting to get low. Lots of arm tackling...

just dreadful fundamentals... not to mention, what appeared to be a complete lack of effort at times.

Norvell has big shoes to fill in Fuente and last year was a mixed bag. I like him but his team didn't give him a lot of effort last night.

Not totally sure CJF defenses were much better at times and our offensive had to win a lot of the games. It was the first game, but next week looks rough with 4 starters out. I just don’t understand why we can cover guys. We did seem to get a little more pressure on the QB, but again, it was ULM. Next week will be a huge test.

Our defense was pretty solid the year leading up to the Miami Beach Bowl, but we've been bad on that side of the ball since Odom left.

Still can't get pressure on the qb. Couple that with corners that give 5 yard cushions will make for a long season. That last TD ULM scored had 2 receivers with no one even close on a obvious throwing down. One open receiver is a blown assignment, not sure how you get 2 so open when the qb is looking there the whole time.

RE: Prognostication Time
I didn't see the game, but I did see the box score. ULM had over 400 yards of offense in the pouring rain. If the Tigers don't improve on defense, they have a ceiling of about 7-8 wins.

In an interview with Vernon last month, Norvell said that he doesn't get caught up in how many yards the defense gives up because he's more concerned about takeaways and timely stops. BS! It's the defense's job to stop the other team from moving the ball. If you're relying on the other team to fumble or throw an INT, then that means your defense STINKS. I'm sure Alabama and Ohio State are efficient in takeaways, but they don't rely on that. They rely on forcing other teams to punt.

The defense continues to be a major concern. They have got to stop good teams from moving the ball if there is any hope of flirting with 10-11 wins.

ULM was 4-5 in the red zone which would go against that theory.

We'll have a much better idea of where this football team is next week.
