STR - Bring Promotion/Relegation to College Football
Just a general outside of the box rant here. Well, not that outside of the box, as it is how the rest of the world handle sports. I've seen promotion/relegation brought up in articles every now and again, but it is something that I believe would be great for college football, before the sport as a whole has its demise.

I've read articles that have all sorts of scenarios regarding conferences and bowl games. I like to keep things simple, do away with conferences and bowl games and let the excitement of promotion and relegation be the draw. Line up teams from NCAA FBS to NAIA in 14 team conferences playing 13 games alternate years of 6 or 7 home games, if possible. No buy games. The championship is determined by who ends up on top of the top division. Promote/Relegate four teams at every level except Level 1 which would have only two relegated teams.

Yes, I know it's not happening, but as one who is usually receptive of change I like to see things shaken up sometimes.

A couple of examples using the Massey Ratings of the 2016 season just for show.

Level 1
1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Ohio State
4. Washington
5. Oklahoma
6. Florida State
7. Michigan
8. Wisconsin
9. USC
10. Penn State
11. LSU
12. Stanford
13. Oklahoma State (relegated)
14. Western Michigan (relegated)

Level 4
43. NC State (promoted)
44. Northwestern (promoted)
45. Air Force
46. Troy
47. Arkansas
48. Toledo
49. Memphis
50. Navy
51. Baylor
52. Mississippi
53. Kentucky
54. TCU
55. Vanderbilt (relegated)
56. Louisiana Tech (relegated)

Asinine idea.

The P5 already looking to create a separate division from the non P6 why would we even consider it.

The one thing we do NOT need to to give the P5 more power and control. A mom level one will never sign another 4 star. If this happened.

He said it would never happen, but I have thought about it myself and it would be amazing. You would also pay each level the same so there would be incentive to do well and second level teams would have something to play for.

If Huddersfield Town can do it, why can't we?

Level one would only be 14 teams and two of those teams would be relegated every year. There would be no guarantee of staying in Level 1 every year. It does not give extra power to the P5. The top level had one non-P5 team. Level 4 where I had Memphis had 8 P5 teams. A P5 team like Kansas would be down around Level 9. It would be much fairer than what is done today which is basically a Jim Crow system.

Honestly the only thing that will maintain football popularity is to promote youth football and keep kids playing...

With all the CTE concerns it is likely that the whole thing may eventually fall apart in time.

I believe the sport is done. That is why I want college football to shake things up a bit before it fades out.

This would be good for the sport on balance. Only change I’d make would be to replace your 2nd and 3rd levels with West and East. Then those two relegate to 4 3rd tier regions (NW, SW, NE, SE). Since you’re relegating down two teams then just place them roughly in geographic groups as they relegate.

Or to really shake things up relegate 4 per division.

Do it like the Bundesliga and have a relegation playoff.

No. What you do is eradicate the NCAA and college athletics. Take all current college football teams and turn them into professional teams (they can pay the university some money for the Name association). Then create 4 divisions with promotion/relegation that get to promote/relegate into the NFL from the top division. And NFL teams can be relegated down as well.

Imagine the bedlam if Clemson and Alabama were playing for the right to play in the NFL the next season.
