To be fair he got the info from the Feds. Major screw up by all parties involved.

We could do without the 20/20 hindsight and finger pointing. Everyone who's anyone agreed with Mayor Turner. Evacuating ~5 million people is a logistical nightmare and would have turned the highways (which are currently under 20 feet of water) into parking lots. Hurricanes don't typically sit in the same spot for 3 days, circle back into the gulf, and then come again.

Prayers for Houston. Hope you are ok.

So did Judge Emmett (a Republican) who honestly has more power over the county than the mayor. Austin has had plenty of rain too. And anyone who evacuated won't be able to return to the worst of the flooded parts of town for weeks to come. Most of the fatalities have been people who were driving in town last night when they shouldn't have been. I heard an interview with one lady who was flooded out that she was at somewhere watching the fight and on the way home when she got flooded out.
BTW I am now in a voluntary evacuation due to potential Brazos River flooding. We don't have any flooding at all in our neighborhood yet despite maybe 22 inches of rain in 3 days.

I think it was the best decision given the circumstances.

Most of the folks, including family, in Houston I know all think Turner has done a wonderful job.

I'm no fan of Turner, but he was correct. Trying to order 7 million people to leave Houston would have been an epic disaster. We tried this during Rita and dozens died. And if you evacuate Houston...people in Corpus wouldn't be able to flee either. There's only so much room on the roads.
And can you imagine how many deaths there would be if a million people had been on the roads, stuck in traffic when the floods came?
And where would they go?

This. Besides, no Republican wants to allow any Democratic Mayor to do anything anyway, so why is it his fault?
Ed Emmett really is the local head of government He's a Republican.
The real cause of this disaster is a failure of planning at all levels of government AND runaway development up the Bayou that has resulted in our flood plains being destroyed. And a failure to invest in our drainage systems (and there have been a lot of roadblocks put up to those investments locally - led by people like Kubosh and the KSEV crowd).

The Governor of Texas doesn't know squat. Google Rita Evacuation for a primer on it.
Where was he planning on SEVEN million people going? What routes would they take? Where would they stay while evacuated? How would that impact the people in mandatory evacuation zones trying to get out of the way of a cat 4 hurricane? How long did Governor Abbott think this evacuation would take? Does the state of Texas have a plan to evacuate Houston?

No, he said that he personally would evacuate, which is an easy thing to say off the cuff when it's Turner's decision. He also said to listen to local officials.

Some of the people living in Houston came from New Orleans area after Katrina hit. Many did not have money to move back home. We still have refugees from Katrina still living here in my area.

I agree with his stance, not all of us have been overly flooded and mind you I'm directly by the coast in a low lying area.
Had this been a normal storm, it would have been over by now. When Allison hit, certain areas flooded but people were all by and large safe at home, school or work. But just like this storm, it stalled and flooded the city for days.
It would have been dumb to evacuate and virtually impossible. Remember the evacuation for Hurricane Rita and all those cars on the freeway?
Imagine all those cars on the freeways getting drenched and not enough man power to come and save everyone (I'm watching the news and I-45 is completely covered in water in some spots). People were safer at their homes with food and what not. If you had to move, it was to a place with heat, electricity, warm water and food. It's not like it was gonna be a direct hit like Rita could have been.
Long story short, I'm with the mayor 100%.

LOL, evacuating in any direction would have led you into the path of the storm! Every direction away from Houston was hit and drenched, including to the Southwest where the eyewall hit. Beaumont is being leveled right now. The only way to escape is on a ship or plane, which you can't evacuate millions of people away on.

RE: Wait so the Houston Mayor told people to stick around they would be fine?
He didnt need to evacuate 7 million people. He should have evacuated those in the most flood prone areas who could not evacuate themselves (such as the now famous nursing home. Not saying that was in Houston or his fault, just saying any place like that in Houston that was prone to flooding and where the occupants could not evacuate themselves ) instead of trying to do it during the flood. They also needed to show maps where flooding was most likely to occur, so those people could relocate temporarily to family members on higher ground prior to the storm hitting. The area was projected to get 20-30 inches of rain. Its Houston. You know parts of it are going to be under ten feet of water.
