Long term debt financing is a bad idea if the campus (read: revenue) isn't expanding or at least standing its ground. This is a big risk that they are taking. I guess the new SEC money can go to pay for this?

The headlines are misleading. Faurot Field is actually shrinking by 6,000 seats. They are taking in the hillside and building training facilities and adding luxury seats. The renovation however will take the capacity from 71,000 to 65,000. Since the median attendance for the SEC is 86,000 and the average attendance is 77,500 it won't exactly improve their standing. But if they can attract more high dollar donors it may help them.

ECU is about to be around 55000 seats. We will be catching up to some SEC teams soon.

Yet you only averaged 44k over the last 4 seasons and the AAC appears to be the tallest midget among the G5 money wise. Why would you expand from 50k to 55k?
I wonder if they'll encounter some sentimental opposition since they're eliminating the big hill with the rock M. My brother goes to Mizzou now, apparently it's a thing. Probably best for the program long term to add these high revenue sections.
It doesn't seem like enough luxury seats to service a $50 million debt ($50 million paid from donations). They might get a slight premium from physical seats vs. grass seats. Time will tell.

We average 44k with bad years. Last year we had 52000+ for the NC State game. We are adding a bunch more luxury seating and increasing capacity for our marquee games since those are our highest ticket revenue games.

Sounds kinda similar to what FSU did to Bowden-Doak Stadium.

This has been the trend at the big-time places for a while now, not expanding just to increase the number of seats, but putting in more suites and box-seats that they can charge a lot more money for.
It's more about dramatically increasing the revenue from a given seat rather than just adding more seats. But fans tend to think purely in terms of gross number of seats, whether a seat is a luxury box generating thousands in revenue or a bleacher seat sold for $30 a game.
So while Missouri's 'expansion' is a contraction in terms of number of seats, it is no doubt intended to be a big expansion in what matters most to them, overall revenue.
