Some Week Zero games thoughts
Rice Sucks

Colorado State has to be an early Access Bowl favorite out of the MWC. Idaho's win over them last year looks even better.

UMass might be a perfect first FBS Opponent for Coastal next weekend. They somehow lost at home to Hawaii today.

Rice Sucks

South Florida rebounds from a horrible start to handle San Jose State. Not sure I'd anoint them a top 20 team like many are confident doing, but they look pretty good.

Rice Sucks

BYU looked like garbage against Portland State, but held on for the win.

Did I mention that Rice sucks? Stanford leads them 38-0 at halftime

RE: Some Week Zero games thoughts
I want to wait to see what Colorado State does against Colorado before I anoint them. It's great to beat any Power 5 by 30+, but Oregon State has been really bad for a while now.

I said months ago I didn't buy into the USF hype and I still stand by that. Any of the Sun Belt's top 3 teams could've beaten that South Carolina team that they've gotten praised heaped on them for beating. Don't see what all the fuss is about Quentin Flowers, either. He's a first-rate G5 QB, so but many pundits act like he's another Dak Prescott.

Rice sucks? What a revelation! The only people that are really surprised are on the CUSA board who want David Bailiff fired (because it's so easy to win at Rice).

CSU's new stadium is fantastic! What's their plan? Big12 move?

I missed Stanford's beat down of Rice but my biggest takeaway from this weekend, have your coaches fine tune special teams. Every game had at least one ST miscue whether it was a kickoff going out of bounds, muffed punts, short terrible punts or blocked punt/FGs. The only ST error I didn't personally see was an errant snap.

I was impressed by Colorado St they appeared to be in mid season form for much of the game.

RE: Some Week Zero games thoughts
I've seen it happen before many times before in the FCS where someone gets an early-season win over a FBS program (even major-conference programs) and then they shoot up to the top 2 in both the official and fan polls, only to later go on to lose several games and not make the playoffs.

If you want a G5 example, people were ready to put Houston in the CFP after they beat Oklahoma, were ready to put ECU in the 2014 Access bowl after they thumped UNC, and were ready to crown South Alabama Sun Belt champs after they beat Miss State last year (and I got rebuked in a polite way for bringing up this same thing last year).

There's a veritable entire season left to go. Focus on the signal and not the noise.

I enjoyed 'week zero'

Oregon State @ CSU, South Florida @ SJSU, and Hawai'i @ UMass were all fun games to watch (so kudos MWC) plus, even Portland State @ BYU ended up being a decent game for 3 quarters.

Stanford vs Rice in Australia was a silly idea, but whatever...the other games were solid football.

just enough to wet my appetite for Thursday/Sat

Looks like UMASS still can't play four quarters. They've been that way for a while now.

It had to be encouraging for Coastal Carolina. UMASS defense was a disaster most of the night, and their offense was good early, and then completely fell apart late like always.

I saw nothing in that game that made me think Coastal couldn't pull off a first FBS win Saturday, though they are going to have to score points in bunches because the Minutemen will put points on the board.

If we're trying to grow college football in Australia, I can't think of many worse games to play there.

Baseball is the mainstream American Sport that has really grown in Australia. I'm not really sure College Football has the following there yet. It's nothing like the NFL in London.

So much unknown for me to be encouraged. Their offense looked pretty good and I think will challenge our D. We have a new offense with new OC who is also the interim head coach. Some people think we'll run an old school triple option, others a spread option. No starting QB named yet. We don't have a full FBS roster yet.

I'm still looking forward to our first FBS game.
