Clemson extends Swinney eight more years
http://theclemsoninsider.com/2017/08/25/...aid-coach/

Quote:Clemson head coach football coach Dabo Swinney will make an average yearly salary of $6.75 million, including all signing and retention bonus. The new contract is an 8-year deal that will run through the 2024 football season and is worth $54 million.

Swinney was supposed to make $4.8 million in 2017, but he will now make $6 million this season. Swinney’s buyout is $6 million for the next two seasons (December 31, 2018) should he leave for another job, the largest buyout among the top 5 highest paid coaches.

The new deal makes Swinney the third highest paid coach in college football from an average per year standpoint, behind Alabama’s Nick Saban ($8.1 million) and Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh ($7.6 million).

Quote:Swinney has compiled an 89-28 record over his first nine seasons (eight full seasons) in Clemson, earning the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award in 2015 and 2016 and the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2009 and 2015. The Tigers have posted a 54-15 record in Atlantic Coast Conference games since Swinney took over, and advanced to postseason bowls every year. The Tigers captured the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship after playing in the title game in 2015, and have recorded an impressive 70-13 record over the past six seasons.

During Swinney’s nine seasons, 157 of 162 senior lettermen have earned their degrees, including eight current members of the football team. His teams have finished among the nation's Top 10 in the NCAA's Academic Progress Report five of the past six years, and a school-record 58 football student-athletes posted a grade point average of 3.0 or above during the 2017 spring semester.

“I want to thank President Clements, Dan Radakovich and his team, the Board of Trustees, and the entire Clemson family,” Swinney said. “My family and I have been extremely blessed to be part of such an incredible university and community for the past 14 years. This contract makes a strong statement. It is a mutual commitment reflective of the program we have built and continue to build at Clemson. The Clemson family does so much to support our program and I couldn’t be more proud to be your head coach.”

RE: Clemson extends Swinney eight more years
Great news. Swinney isn't a follow the money type of guy, but Clemson has stepped up to the plate to compensate him according to the market value of an elite coach. Bama and Texas could outbid Clemson in theory, but Swinney doesn't care about the money and a 50% raise at that salary level doesn't change someone's life like a 50% raise at my salary level 03-wink

The greatest retention mechanism Clemson has is Will Swinney fulfilling a "lifelong dream" of playing for Clemson (not Bama) and two younger sons who will likely follow the same path. He has an incredible amount of sweat equity, having built the program from the ground up and making the program in his own image/personality. The Bama folk around here think he'd crawl to Tuscaloosa, but I wouldn't be surprised if he declined it when the time comes.

The thing is, as long as they are paid very healthily, like Dabo and Jimbo are, I'm not sure either really wants to do what you need to do to thrive in the SEC.

The biggest example is roster management. Neither guy has shown a strong willingness to want to cut players and oversign. They like giving scholarships to walk-ons. Dabo likes to give spots to inspirational kids.

I don't see either guy showing an interest in cutting kids and churning the roster of a bunch of underwhelming players.

I don't see either guy playing games in recruiting, as in promising a guy can play one position and switching him on the first day of practice. Jimbo has hit a very high success rate with position switches, but he's pretty well known for letting it be the kid's final decision...even when it's obvious to everybody.

You don't hear a lot about offers being pulled or converted to grey shirts on signing day out of those two schools.

I'm not saying they would never leave...but I think that's an aspect that's underappreciated. You simply can't carry dead weight in the SEC like you can in the ACC and like these coaches have shown willingness to do.

And I just have a very hard time imagining Dabo following Saban from a personality standpoint. I just can't believe the Alabama fans would take his goofiness well as soon as they lost a game. Fisher could probably fit the culture Saban has developed a little more.

The smart move by Clemson. He has that program rolling like it's probably never rolled before.

Good points, Lou. Character counts, kids and their parents appreciate it.

Regarding position switches, leaving the final decision to the player is the key. What is the player's dream? To be on the field any way he can or to be the best he can at this position. When a kid makes the choice he buys into it fully. (Not to mention he learns to use counsel form others, self analysis, self criticism to know one's limitations, etc), far more important to life than a few years on the gridiron. The best coaches are ones that teach life lessons along with coaching.

I don't see Swinney of Fisher wanting to play the off-field "games" the way the SEC does. There is no need to when they can win in the ACC. Nor would they follow in the shadow of Saban, whoever follows Saban will have that permanent expectation of supremacy at all times (Not sure why when Alabama hits the cycles like every other team, but so it is). Anyway, no need to follow a legend when they are becoming legends at their respective schools.

Clemson did the right thing. DS proved his worth and built Clemson to perennial power status. Good move Clemson. 04-cheers

The impressive part is he's done it without kicking kids back into bad neighborhoods. That's a program I'd send a kid to.
