Quote:Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but these bands have, presumably, had those songs and sheet music for more than a week?

It's not the performance I'm critiquing, MSS played the music quite well (great sound). I'm speaking more about the arrangements. Bruno Mars later stuff is classic 80's funk band stuff, full of syncopation and swing, especially in the lower brass. Upper brass needs to be more percussive ,punch the notes and "feel" it. James Brown used to tell his band "every instrument is a drum" in order to play real funk music. I see none of that in the arrangements that MSS played. Perhaps they need to look at the arrangements from SU or the Boom to help kick the performance up a notch.

He's right about the funk thing..it's percussive. But again, that ain't the band's call. And truthfully, our band sounded so good, I didn't even bother to think about arrangements.

It was uplifting AF. period. I got no critique to bring that sound down.

I agree. It is not the funkyest of arrangements. But I will say this. As I listened to the Jackson State version, I noticed they had trouble hitting the syncopated 16ths, and Doctor Plenk has a background in International Drum Corp (Phantom Regiment I believe). He's probably going to be a little more conservative on the frills, and focus on musicality. Sound quality. Marching. (and MAN, do they need some cleaning, LOL)

My third child is starting her freshman year on the symbol line this fall. My son played Bass for 4 years, his wife played bass (they met in HS band), my middle daughter was on the color guard for 4 years (and now assists instructing/writing work), and now my third is in the band. Wouldn't trade that experience for anything. I think it has taught them all about teamwork and selflessness.

I did a little research on Dr. Will Plenk, our new band director. His bio is below. He increased the size of the Univ of Nevada Reno band and did so by acquiring a corporate sponsor for the band that provided a lot of the funding for the additional band members, travel expenses and new uniforms. He also uses a lot more activity/animation from the band members...somewhat like what the USC band does. Overall, I would expect a lot of improvements in the Mighty Sound of the South in the future. Here is a link to a UNR band performance from 2016 which may give you a glimpse of what our band will evolve into in order to make the overall football game experience more exciting and enticing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6g46WSXC9s

William Plenk was most recently Director of Marching/Athletic Bands at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was assistant conductor of the UCLA Symphonic Band, associate conductor of the UCLA Wind Ensemble and associate conductor of the UCLA Brass Ensemble.

Plenk has worked with concert bands and marching bands across the United States, Singapore and Japan, including three seasons with the Tenrikyo Aimachi Marching Band from Nagoya, Japan, the eight-time All Japan National Champion.

Dr. Plenk has served on the staff of several drum and bugle corps including The Academy, Boston Crusaders and Phantom Regiment. He is currently a member of the College Band Directors National Association, College Music Society, the National Association for Music Education and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.

Hey guys, just passing through. The band sounds good! I love the "brassy" in-your-face sound which you seem to find more often in the South. I particularly enjoyed the Eye of the Tiger short, which I have never heard before.

From this thread I'm getting the impression that the Memphis band has had it rough lately, but is looking great under a new director. Cincy's band is in a very similar situation, with new director Chris Nichter coming this year from WVU. Here's to a breath of fresh air for both bands! 04-cheers

Well, I typically keep anything negative to myself as far as the band directors go. But I will go on record as saying that I am VERY pleased with the direction that Dr. Plenk is going with the band. I envision really great things for them in future.

And I'm excited for you guys as well! A new band director can go one of two ways. So I hope for the best for you as well!

Possibly....things to come as far as a parade routine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw0j7Z5fIrM

The band sponsor is GREATER NEVADA CREDIT UNION. They provide thed added funding to expand the band.

Found this video on the UNR band at a tailgate party. If you have ever seen the SONG GIRLS with the Univ of So. Calif band, you will get an idea of where this sort of thing can eventually end up at.

Here is UNR

Here are the USC Song Girls. Get ready to drool. FYI, these are NOT the cheerleaders. The SONG GIRLS is an entirely separate group.

I made a quick MP3 and put it on TinyUpload. Click the green link that says "Mighty Sound of the South - 2017 - Pep Songs (Part 2).mp3" to download it.

Link

I also made an MP3 of MSS Part 3 (Eye of the Tiger), because my high school mascot was also the Tigers, and I am still fond of the song after playing it myself hundreds of times.

Link

Using a custom ringtone on an iPhone doesn't look easy, but here is a link to a page that has instructions. Or you could get an Android. 02-13-banana

Yes, Corps (DCI) Bands and Show style bands approach musicality a bit differently. What Dr. Plenk would call "frills" the Boom would call essentials in order to affect the song in a way that connects to the audience and is more genuine to what the song writers are doing. What I get from the MSS playing Funk tunes is almost like a parrot mimicking words. Yes, the word is spoken by the parrot, but the parrot really does not know what it is saying and definitely is not communicating anything. Again, its not a commentary on the musicianship of the members of the MSS. Its more a commentary on how well a DCI band can and should play Funk music. I would say either "feel it' (through the arrangements), or leave it alone (stay in your lane).

I wouldn't say this is appropriation, they are musicians trying to play music from other musicians/songwriters. It happens all the time. They just need a different approach, that's all.
