I am sorry to hear this. I only know him from this board, but he seemed like a great guy and his positive voice will be missed.

Heartbreaking news. I never met him, but online, he always seemed like one of the most relentlessly positive people I've ever met.

Prayers for his family and those who knew him.

Oh my. Didn't know him, but quite the loss to his family and the Rice community.

This is shocking news. Rick was way too young. He was a year behind me in Sid Rich and just a wonderful, wonderful guy. My deepest condolences to his family.

That so many of us knew him only from this board, yet are shocked and deeply saddened speaks volumes. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

What a terrible shock! I'm outside the Houston area, so I didn't hear about it until this morning on this board. Rick was in the class before me, and I knew him back at Rice. He always seemed to have a smile on his face, and was friendly to everyone. I noticed on this board, that no matter how dark things got, he would always put a positive spin on things. I didn't always agree, but it's good to see the other side to help balance things out on this board. We'll certainly miss him here, and my thoughts go out to his family and friends.

This is very sad to hear. A good man. His passing is a loss to all who knew him.

What a shock. I find myself saddened by this news far more than I would have anticipated, given that I did not know Rick in real life.

Sad news indeed. I am fortunate to have met Rick personally a few times at Rice road games. He was a frequent counterbalance to a lot of the negativity people here were feeling and/or expressing, including me. Thoughts to his family and friends.

This is a very big loss for the Rice community, although I'm sure a much bigger loss for his family. My prayers go out to him and his family. While as others have said I frequently disagreed with him, I always admired his unrelenting optimism and positive outlook. He was one of the people who made this Parliament a very enjoyable, as well as informative, forum. R. I. P., Mr. Gerlach.

Between this and the loss of Kent, this forum is immeasurably diminished.

Amen to that

I'm new here, and I hate to be the one to mention it, but should we dedicate the season to Rick? I 'd be willing to wear a neon green sweat band on my wrist at all the home games I attend. It would be a great way for us to connect in his honor. Just a thought here

That's devastating news. I had the pleasure of meeting Rick at games many times up here in Dallas and have bantered back and forth for what must be 20 years online.

My heart goes out to his family - I think he has probably two kids that are college age and one or more in high school.

Awful news. I only knew Rick online, but in that context he came across as a truly decent person. Prayers to his family.

Shocking and unexpected news. Another loss.

I met Rick during freshman year PE class. He is not one that you forget.

Years later, when I saw him post on The Parliament, it was vintage RickG.

He is a true blue Rice fan for sure.

I hope that there is peace for his family.
