Hmmm
“It was a relief for me,” Otto said about the adjustment, “I had a lot of outings in a short period of time as a reliever. I felt like I didn’t really have the opportunity to recover sometimes like I would have liked. But becoming a starter, you get a routine and a whole week and 6 or 7 days to recover. With that program in place, you get to be a lot more refreshed for the next outing.”

I was going to mention that comment as well. Guess opposing coaches will have that one ready to trot out to players who are also being recruited by Rice...

That quote could be made by just about every college closer.

From afar it always seemed like Otto wasn't thrilled to be at Rice but I have no inside knowledge. It didn't help when his uncle went on an online rant about how A&M should've offered him.

Other colleges aren't fighting a narrative pushed by national pundits.

Perhaps, but it was actually made by Rice's closer. I think Otto had more multi-inning appearances than most other closers, but I haven't done the research. As both a Rice fan and former player, I thought Otto pitched too much the last couple years, so it is interesting to hear him basically saying the same thing.

I don't think that's the case, though both his uncle and dad did complain alot. Glenn simply held his emotions in check, and was not the constant smiler of someone like Rendon, or a pranskster like Myers. He was not heavily recruited out of high school, and it was at Rice that he developed his devastating hammer curve. I do believe he wanted the opportunity to be a starter at Rice, but unlike Lemond in his junior season (with an experienced and proven Ditman ready to take over the closer role), we never had a viable alternative for closer other than Otto, and our starters this past year hardly ever pitched out of the 6th inning.

No question he had more multi-inning games that most other closers, but those strictly one-inning closers were frequently used on consecutive days, whereas Otto was not.
