RE: Hurricane Harvey
This is a bad storm.

Mandatory evacuation of Mansfield and Aransas Pass, each no more than 30 mi from Corpus.

We have several groups of friends in Aransas Pass. Each called up two days ago asking if we had our guest rooms available. They told us last night (when it was expected to be a Cat 1 storm) that they were going to ride it out with neighbors. Called us two hours ago (literally within minutes of one another) and told us Aransas had done the mandatory evacuation and they were on the road/packing to come up. Roads are absolutely packed in the CC area.

So, burgers are being thawed, beer is being chilled, and we are going to have one major league packed house this weekend.

No not at all. The hurricane wind forces will be confined to mostly Corpus Christi and nearabouts. The rain totals will be extraordinary (now they're saying 30-40 inches possibly in Houston from Saturday-Thursday). The last thing you want to be doing is driving in those conditions.

I'm not seeing anyone leaving town like we saw for Ike in 2005. I do see a shortage of water and groceries, and probably gas will be tough to find by Sunday. If everything is flooded, even if we have power, the stores will be empty. But we may not have widespread power outages.

BTW, this will affect Louisiana big-time too, and the entire country will probably see gas prices higher by 30-50 cents a gallon at the minimum within a week or two??

And didn't those random Klan idiots claim this was the largest organized march in years?

Not remotely what Trump did. He compared the actions of 'a few' on the right to 'a few' on the left. If you refuse to accept that there were people there from the left looking for a fight, then you're not engaging in reality.

What difference does it make WHAT those people claimed? As I understand the previous ones had resulted in something like a few hundred at best and often more counter-protesters and media than them, that's not a very high bar for a nation of 350mm people.

Thank you for providing exhibit #1 that 'the left' does precisely what I said you do... and precisely what you accused the right of doing.

To Trump's credit, he already has tweeted out about Harvey, hoping people are planning for it and staying safe. That may be the first presidential thing he's done in Washington.

Sustained winds in excess of 100 mph forecast for 12 hours or more for the area between Corpus and Victoria.

Expected to be just shy of a Cat 4 hurricane at landfall.

Storm surge expected to be between 8 and 14 feet.

For Corpus and area, especially the area just 30 miles north of Corpus, this is going to be a *very* bad storm.

If you are Aransas +- 50 miles, this is a get the hell away from it type storm.

Yes obviously if you're in Corpus/Aranas/etc., evacuate now. This will be the first Cat 3 landfall in the USA in 8 years I think I read? And it might even be a Cat 4. But people in Houston don't need to evacuate was my point. That's 200 miles from us. I would say Galveston should stay put too but after suffering 600-700 dollars damage to my hood there 2 months ago after a 'minor' rain event there, I wouldn't take any chances if I lived there with their horrible drainage issues.

RE: Hurricane Harvey

Quote: As a major hurricane churns in the Gulf of Mexico, New Orleans is facing the biggest threat to public safety since Katrina ravaged the city 12 years ago. With a large number of pumps and turbines out of service, it is not clear if the city is ready for Hurricane Harvey, and the city is studying emergency evacuation plans.

Three of the five power turbines that power the 120 pumps that are supposed to keep the low-lying city from being swamped by rainwater are not working. And 15 of those pumps were offline because of repairs.

Earlier this month, substantial rainfall caused the Lakeview and Mid-City neighborhoods to flood, soaking some areas in knee-deep water because the city’s pump and drainage systems were not at full capacity. Harvey is expected to pour another five to 10 inches of rain on the city.

Quote:The problems New Orleans faces stem from its antiquated pumping and drainage system, as well as controversy at the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board (S&WB).

The S&WB told city officials and the public numerous times that the pumps were operating at “full capacity” during New Orleans’ recent flooding. This turned out to be untrue, as the S&WB confirmed later — first admitting that eight pumps were out of service. A day later, they revealed that 14 were actually down. And then, a few days after that, they upped the total to 16 pumps being out of service.

To pile onto the problems, the city was then left with a single working turbine to power its drainage pumps and water treatment plant on the Thursday following the Aug. 5 storm. Landrieu promised that the city would develop redundancy power options in case the single working turbine failed.

Quote:"City Hall has known for years that drainage is inadequate," Jacobs said after his resignation, according to the New Orleans Advocate. "I’m disappointed that instead of standing up and saying this is a problem, and now the’s time to deal with it, we’re going to shoot a civil servant an hour until this problem is resolved."

I predict that once again a catastrophe that is a result of a failure of dim leadership in New Orleans gets blamed on a Republican President.

RE: Hurricane Harvey
I've got a friend that went to Houston to visit his wife's family now he's coming back and probably bringing them to El Paso. The last time I remember a hurricane (Allen) in CC was in 1981. I was in the Naval Reserve and doing my two weeks training. My wife and 5 year old went with me but I had to send them home. My ex now was mad because I didn't stay until the bus left and now that I think about it she was right but staying wouldn't guarantee that the bus wouldn't encounter problems on the road. I had to cross a short bridge that connected the base to the mainland and that bridge was down the next day. The barracks were a mess as there were beer dispensers and the younger sailors got stupid drunk and the plumbing going bad didn't help things. What a stink. Vomit all over and clogged toilets. No fun.

I'm glad that I was an E-5 and didn't have to do any cleanup. 03-wink

I hope the Trump administration has learned from the mistakes of the past and is fully on top of this impending disaster. Prayers for those in its path. This looks like it is going to be a major flood event inland. This could be very bad.

Still need to get gas for my jeep and fill some 5 gallon jugs of water. Also a hand cranked radio should be good.

Having gone through these damn things a bunch of times...I know what you are going through. My list....fuel for the generator....propane for the grills and cookers....plenty of water...as many coolers of stored ice as possible... and booze. The rest seems to work itself out. Stay safe UT...good luck.

I did end up getting lighter fluid and a canister filled with gas. Also got some charcoal for my grill. All I need is a hand cranked radio and probably fill those jugs of water. Got around 120 bottles or so, and filled more bottles with water that I have at the house.
