If anything it should be troublesome to some of our fellow schools that we regularly beat on the field and in the classroom despite them being much larger than us enrollment wise.

Tulsa has one of the most complete athletic departments in the AAC (and all of the non-auto 5). I was originally skeptical of Tulsa's inclusion, but my view on them has drastically changed.

Even UCONN football is less boring than anything Wichita related in the Fall. Let that sink in...

Appreciate that. As far as school-wide athletics go UCONN has to be one of our biggest competitors in this conference along with SMU.

I'm not wanting to argue, but endowments are a measuring stick of the overall financial health of an academic institution all things being equal. Of course it's used primarily for academic purposes, but as the article points out, donations earmarked for athletics are just that, earmarked. We have no idea what percentage of Tulsa's endowment might be restricted to athletics.

As important as athletics are for bolstering a university's image as well as enrollment, I'd suspect that endowment funds have been misappropriated on more than one occasion, at more than one university, over the last hundred years or so.

You're an AD at XYX university and your football program is bleeding cash and your recent fundraising initiative is woefully behind. What do you do? Do you tell the coach to lay off some assistants and take the bus or do you take a "small" loan against your 1.5B dollar endowment? If colleges have found a way to cheat the NCAA and get away with it, I've got to believe they've found ways to siphon endowments during "emergencies" even when specifically prohibited.

Understand I'm talking straight out of my ass when I say all this.

However improbable in your mind, you must admit it's possible.

Hey, I didn't start the enrollment smack on Tulsa... I just joined in. Why redirect your fury back at lil' old Wichita? Texan Mark and the Syracuse Orangemen are responsible for the initial volley. So much anger towards the Shockers...

P.S. If Wichitan's need football, they've got Silo-Tech to our north.

I've always thought of Tulsa as a slightly larger Oral Roberts University. ORU is nearing 4k in enrollment. Maybe it's the other way around? ORU went into the ChicKUn Coop and fed those cowards a big helping of humble pie. ORU has also come into Wichita and given the Shocker baseball team all they can handle and then some.

Oh my... I just looked up the Tulsa/ORU basketball rivalry and it seems that the series is split over the last 16 meetings..............

Sounds to me like Wichita belongs in the same conference as Oral Roberts. Let the big boy schools like Tulsa play in a conference that actually matters. 07-coffee3

Size-wise, Tulsa would fit in well with the other private schools within the city of Wichita. In fact, they'd ironically be the second largest in that battle:

Newman University - 3736
Tulsa University - 3500
Friends University - 2782

It is legitimately amazing that TU has D1 sports considering their size, and that's really not a put-down. What is the smallest D1 school that plays in a conference that is competitively - say - within the 50th percentile and above? Is it TU?

EDIT: Wow... how did I forget about our former MVC brethren Evansville, and their 2500 enrollment. Think I've inadvertently blotted those sh*theel coattail riders from my mind. They, along with Drake and Loyola, are the parties most happy to dig the modern MVC's grave. Of course it is debatable at this point whether or not the MVC even makes the 50th percentile threshold. In all seriousness, I'm thrilled to trade in those clowns for privates like Tulsa, SMU and Tulane, athletically-speaking.

This is going to blow a few people's minds. A typical major DI school has over 350 student athletes. Memphis for example has almost 400. It appears likely that roughly 10% of Tulsa's student body are on athletic scholarship. I visited their campus recently and was amazed at how small it was. I was hard pressed to find any academic buildings among all the apartment complexes. I'm starting to get the picture. Tulsa has big oil to thank for their existence. I highly doubt fees on a couple thousand students would bridge the gap on the expenses occurred running a competitive AAC athletic program. And they don't have the money coming in from a packed arena/stadium like Wichita does. The only explanation is an endowment funded by a couple heavy mofos.

Tuition money runs our school for roughly 2/3rds of a semester.

I thought tuition was primarily for academic purposes; e.g., administration salaries, building utilities/repairs, grounds maintenance, etc.

Tulsa is small. Though we do certainly have classrooms. Most everything you see on campus these days is less than 20 years old or it has been majorly renovated within the last ten years.

In the last 20 years Tulsa:
Constructed the Reynolds Center
Constructed the Case Athletic Complex to the North of the football stadium
Did a major renovation of the football stadium
Bought and razed neighborhoods surrounding the old campus and built 5 apartment complexes
Built the Case Tennis Center
Built Collins Hall / Admin Center
Built a new large-scale fitness center
Renovated the Library
Renovated the "Old U"
Renovated the dining hall
Renovated the Student Union
Built the Collins Softball Complex
Built the Hurricane Soccer / Track Stadium
Built a HUGE Performing Arts Center
Built 2 new engineering buildings dedicated to computer science, petroleum and mechanical engineering
Created several plazas around campus
Renovated the "Power Plant"
Built a new residence hall
Renovated several of the old classroom buildings around campus
Renovated the Engineering Classroom building
Built a "university school" for faculty and surrounding residence's children.

Also, comparing sizes, Tulsa's campus is roughly .35 sq miles to WSU's .5 sq miles. It's not an astounding difference considering Tulsa is surrounded by more than just wheat farms and aircraft plants.

That's what I was talking about. Idk whether athletics is included in that or not. Probably not.
