RE: Richmond partners with CSN for 4 home games on TV
Quote:The Richmond Spiders long-standing partnership with regional sports network CSN Mid-Atlantic will be enhanced this fall, when all home football games are produced in-house by SpiderTV and televised live on CSN or CSN+.

Four games will air on CSN+ beginning with the Family Weekend home opener Sept. 16 vs. Howard, followed by Sept. 23 vs. Elon, Oct. 7 vs. Albany and the Oct. 28 Homecoming game vs. Stony Brook. The Elon game will be joined in progress on CSN+ at 7pm, with the game shown in its entirety in Central Virginia on WTVR-TV's digital channel 6.3 beginning at 6pm. The Nov. 18 Capital Cup rivalry game with William & Mary is scheduled to air on CSN.

Bob Black and Chris Anderson will move from the radio booth for the CSN telecasts. They will be joined by WTVR-TV sports anchors Lane Casadonte and Sean Robertson, who will share sideline reporting duties. Robert Fish and Matt Smith will provide the radio call for home games on the Spider IMG Sports Network.

CSN will assist in syndicating the telecasts to regional sports networks in other markets, allowing for greater access and viewership of Spider Football, which opens the season ranked seventh nationally. Those clearances will be announced on a game-by-game basis.

"CSN has enjoyed a great, longstanding relationship with the Richmond Spiders, which has built a tremendous program on the verge of another exciting season," said CSN Mid-Atlantic Programming Manager Joanna Shapes. "We are excited to deliver this tremendous Spider content to our viewers."

More than half of the Spiders' eleven regular season games will appear on linear TV, including the season opener at Sam Houston St. Sun. Aug. 27 on ESPNU.

Richmond is also slated for two appearances on the CAA's digital "Game of the Week." The Oct. 21 contest at Delaware and the Oct. 28 game vs. Stony Brook will be available for free on College Sports Live online (collegesportslive.com) and on the College Sports Live mobile app.

"We have always valued our relationship with CSN and are thrilled to expand the partnership," said David Walsh, Richmond interime athletic director. "We also believe SpiderTV is an industry leader in collegiate video productions, which is an integral part of making this happen. We know fans viewing habits are changing, and we are committed to giving them both online and on-the-air options to enjoy our games."

Online video streaming is planned for all games, including SpiderTV on RichmondSpiders.com for home games and from the opposing institution when the Spiders are on the road, as well as network platforms for selected games. Richmond's Sept. 9 contest at Colgate is set for digital online video streaming at no charge on the newly-formed STADIUM sports network.

SpiderTV, directed by Blake Ellett, has produced multiple home football games for CSN since 2015. Since 2012, CSN has carried a schedule of men's basketball telecasts produced by SpiderTV, an arrangement that is expected to continue this season.

Kudos to Richmond officials recognizing that the streaming deal via the CAA was going to be an awful deal and being proactive for their school and fan base. I doubt this is a deal that materialized in a less than a week so, great job to them.

This also highlights how JMU officials just accept whatever 'crap sandwich' the CAA serves up and ask if they can get some 'corn on the side'.

4 of Richmond's 5 home games at their little brick breadbox will be on regional TV this year.

JMU gets zero (to date).

Let that sink in.

JMU will closely monitoring the situation, should an opportunity present itself, we will examine the offer and explore it with due diligence through a third party negotiator who will break down the essentials to see if there could be a fit.

Folks should be ticked, this is an unacceptable position for JMU football to be in......the only thing that does not make sense is that JMU has one game being broadcast and that is on some lame, streaming CAA solution. Which is even more absurd b/c JMU already did this for free.....via Madizone.

Let's hear one of the apologists on this board defend this one.

Nobody's defending the (lack of a) TV situation.

Not sure how the JB apologists can sugar coat this one.

No excuses for this one. Regardless of all sports or football only affiliation there is simply no way JMU administration can defend this.

On pace to have our highest season tickets figure and the lowest number of eyes watching the team on television. Makes no sense. Absolutely none.

JMU just got outsmarted, outworked and out- hustled by that little private school with the high school stadium in Richmond.
They value making sure their "front porch" is in good shape for all to see.

The thing that is crazy about the Richmond deal is how bad the rating will be for their games. They have a very small fan base and no casual fan will tune in for their games. Yet they were able to pull this off. Not saying ratings for our games will be great, but it will certainly be better than Richmond's. If they can do this, so should we.

I agree with your sentiment. 4 of the 5 games will be on CSN+, not the main CSN channel. Better for folks who can actually get that channel and who don't want to deal with streaming (read: MadiZone).

I still wonder aloud is the UR-JMU game going to seriously be the one left out of everything? If I were CSN, I'd trade all the home UR games for the 1 game that might actually get some inkling of a TV audience.

Fwiw, they are just redistributing "spider TV" which is their version of madizone. They've had TV games in the past that consisted of it being spider TV, but it was about one or two games a season that weren't picked up by csn.

JMU has madizone, so why can't csn also just pick that up?
