ODU just announced they will be adding the sport in 2020. Great news

I know they have been discussing this for years, but is the first time they actually put a start date?

This is fantastic news!

They also said that they would consider adding beach volleyball after the indoor team gets established.

Happy to see a date attached, and adding beach volleyball would be pretty unique and nice for the area. I am pretty sad that the announcement also confirmed no softball, which is probably my 3rd favorite sport behind basketball and football. I guess they don't see the cost/benefit ratio in their favor considering how tight our footprint is now.

There's just no land for facilities.

Not sure what venue they will use for games. I have heard the scoreboard is to low at the Ted but this article says otherwise.

I think they'll be renovating the former basketball practice gym in the Jim Jarrett building and making it into a Volleyball/Wrestling venue.

I would expect this to be structures like wrestling. Upgrade/enhance the space of the JJ gym, and this will be where all practices & most games will be held. I would definitely see our "bigger" games would be held in the Ted, but I can't see more than 2-4 per season.

With all due respect to wrestling, I think the popularity of volleyball will quickly out grow the capacity of the Athletic Admin gym.

Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right. I would imagine that if/when that occurs, they would definitely move more games to the Ted. But in the meantime, you need to prep the JJ to hold competitions. If they don't outgrow the JJ gym, I would think that a 90% packed JJ would have a more competitive crowd environment than if just 200 people were in the Ted.

I can see it possibly being an issue as far as creature comforts are concerned, but if baseball, soccer, and tennis can work around the parking over there, I see no reason why volleyball can't as well.

The NCAA's attendance report for 2015 doesn't make me think that women's volleyball will have to worry about being at the Ted for a long while.

Only 45 programs averaged more than 1,000 fans per match. Nobody in the top 50 was in CUSA or Virginia. And CUSA wasn't in the top 10 for Division 1 conferences—and with the No. 10 MAC clocking in at a healthy 608 per match, it's not exactly a high bar.

Last year's CUSA stats don't augur well for a big gym either. Almost all matches have tree-digit attendance, in many cases the low end of three-digit. And that's assuming the numbers haven't been fudged (there's generally not as much oversight on attendance numbers in the non-revenue sports).

If ODU hosted the CUSA tournament or an NCAA regional, that'd be an appropriate time for the Ted, but putting 400 fans in there for a match with North Texas would give you just a terrible home-court advantage.

It would be nice to add a woman's sport that could generate a little revenue. Is there such a thing?

If they are top 25 consistently and winning conference championships they will make money. Otherwise no
