Not surprised because Sander was getting up there and accomplished what he needed to.

Thank you Doc Sander for the wonderful job that was done. We are in a tremendously better place now than we were when Dr. Sander took over. Congratulations to our new AD Scott Carter and thank you Dr. Noland for everything!

Thank You, Dr Sander for a job well done.

It's amazing to see all the changes and accomplishments that you and your staff are directly responsible for.

When many many others said it couldn't be done, you and your staff did it.

I hope you will stay close to ETSU.

Agreed on all fronts. Doc did an amazing job with this program. Basketball's back to winning championships, I think football is going to get a lot better as time goes on, and all of the other sports, save a couple, are either competitive or successful. Won two all-sports trophies since he took over, if I'm not mistaken. Put basketball into what has become an incredible arena. Was over the athletic department to build the new football stadium. All in 6 (?) years or so? An amazing job.

Excited to see what Scott can do. I think both are great fundraisers (well I know that first hand). Athletics is in good hands. 11 days until football kicks off! Can't wait.

Thanks to Sanders for all you did. Best AD I could have hoped for. Very nervous about Scott Carter, but we all knew this day was coming as soon as he was hired as Associate AD. I hope Carter is as transparent as Sander with the Inside the Dome videos, etc.

Dr. Sander, a man of vision, a man of integrity, a man of action, a man who helped raise ETSU athletics to the top tier of the Southern Conference.

Thanks for a job exceptionally done.

RE: BREAKING NEWS: Dr Sander retires...Scott Carter takes over
Well, I knew this was coming, but didn't think they'd announce it today. I was out of town for the eclipse and missed the last part of the "leak".

Although I'm a bit wary of how Scott will do, he's earned his shot, I think. He and Doc obviously truly love each other, and so the way I see it is that Sander is completely in favor of this. That's about as good as it gets in terms of cred, so I'll be cautiously optimistic. And certainly Scott loves ETSU - can't question that in the least. Would love to have had Sander for 25 more years, but hey - we'll take our blessings when and where we can. No way in the world can Scott have Sander's rolodex - covering the whole country - but very few can at this level. Hopefully, unless Ezell doesn't produce, there shouldn't be much turnover for awhile (other than Forbes maybe as soon as this year, but maybe not).
I'll also say that I doubt Scott can 'juggle' the 14 things in his head at a time Sander seemed to be able to, but again, very few can. Also, although Sander was open and transparent, he was also scheming/planning several moves (and years) ahead; hopefully Scott and ETSU will reap the rewards from that long into the future.

But echoing what others have said, Dr. Sander - we can't thank you enough. Dr. Noland and you have righted this pirate ship even quicker than any dreamed, I think. And I'm gonna assume Doc will still have his hands in things as needed (advising Scott, etc.)

To be here, compared to where we were when Sander was hired, is nearly unbelievable. I know we've all been pinching ourselves for awhile now; let's hope we have to keep that up....

(Also, and I truly hate to bring this up, but remember who brought this man to us. Silver lining around every cloud.)

Dr. Sander has been outstanding, and he will be missed. Hopefully he has left an enduring footprint on the program.

Best of luck to Mr. Carter.

I echo all the praise for Dr. Sander. Here's hoping he stays around in some sort of consulting role. Would hate to lose his wisdom and nationwide contacts. But if he is fully retiring, then well deserved.

RE: BREAKING NEWS: Dr Sander retires...Scott Carter takes over
Has ETSU ever had an AD do so much in so little time??? Dr. Noland made the most shrewd move of his ETSU career bringing Dr. Sander on board, first as a consultant then full-time AD. Dr. Sander literally saved ETSU athletics from the brink of obscurity. From canning Bartow to bringing in Forbes, Freedom Hall upgrades, and of course the return of football which is set to sellout the home opener next week.

I hate to see Dr. Sander go but it's a good time. He can mic drop and walk off into the sunset leaving ETSU athletics in a MUCH better place than he found it.

Epic Applause

RE: BREAKING NEWS: Dr Sander retires...Scott Carter takes over
Dr. Noland and Dr. Sander were both smart. They surrounded themselves with good people. I think it was Bear Bryant that said he was only as good as his assistants were, and in this case I believe that to be the same. He elevated the game of some of the people who stayed, cut loose some of the dead weight (Barbie Breedlove), and brought Scott on board who's been ready for his shot for awhile. I'm glad he got this opportunity personally, he's a pretty respected guy in that circle and with the contacts he's got I just couldn't envision him staying in the number 2 chair at ETSU forever. Young, exceptionally smart, ambitious, and the type of guy who can motivate people. He's going to continue to build on the foundation that Sander laid, and I'm sure there will be some philosophical changes in places we'll never notice, there always are with changes in leadership in any organization, but they'll be done with long term success in mind without hurting the present and immediate future.

RE: BREAKING NEWS: Dr Sander retires...Scott Carter takes over
I'm sad for Dr. Sander retiring. Glad he's staying around ETSU for the doctorate program. I think that's going to be an area that will be awesome for ETSU and our community.

I like Scott and I think he will do well. My only critique of him is that he's first and foremost a salesman. Thankfully, that always on salesmanship comes from a genuine passion for ETSU and it shows that he has tremendous pride in the school and athletic programs. That makes it much less annoying than it can be when others have that personality trait. As long as he can continue with that passion and pride, he has the potential to grow the program to great heights.

I agree with about all that, but that "salesmanship" trait *could* come at the expense of strategic thinking. And strategic thinking is what Sander has excelled at. To an almost mind-boggling degree. If Sander isn't a literal genius (by whatever definition(s) you want to use), he's darn close. Carter is no dummy - don't get me wrong - but I haven't yet seen great intellectual prowess demonstrated. To be fair tho.....one couldn't see it right away in Sander, either. (But it didn't take long.) Scott has been around the program enough, and I've interacted with him enough, to know there *appears* to be a small step down there on a pure intellectual level. But of course his passion walks tall, and should serve us well. Also fortunately, not everyone (hardly) at the top levels of intercollegiate athletics is a "genius". But you might be surprised at how bright many of the presidents and ADs in the SoCon are. Several are WAY sharp.

Also, and this may come across as nit-picking, but I think Scott's very strong loyalty to ETSU could also partially blind him to pitfalls. This point is hard to explain, and I don't think I adequately can in short format. A semi-analogy might be for an athlete to have the mind-set "if I try hard enough I'll succeed". While that's well and good, it's not enough in and of itself. That's where the strategic thinking and strategic vision come in. Hopefully, since Scott's been back here, Sander has helped to hone that (although I've yet to see it). And despite Scott's enthusiasm and experience.........said experience pales, still, in comparison to both Sander and some of his fellow ADs he'll be 'competing' against.

Let me pose a thought experiment............could/would Scott have hired Steve Forbes? Maybe that helps illustrate my point. Discuss amongst yourselves....

Ultimately, I think it'll come down to exactly what challenges lie down the road. We certainly could do far worse, and as I wrote earlier, I'll be cautiously optimistic.

No. It's *conceivable* Todd Stansbury could have been in that conversation had he been given the freedom and authority to act the way he wanted to, but we'll never know. So I think my bet would still be on Sander.

RE: BREAKING NEWS: Dr Sander retires...Scott Carter takes over
I will give Carter the benefit of the doubt due to the fact that his roles so far at UT and ETSU has been largely fundraising. He sounds to me like a politician, and just comes off the wrong way to me. Part of that may be the contrast to what I perceive as a very authentic Dr. Sander especially on the videos he makes.

However, my biggest concerns are 1) his connections outside of the Tennessee area and 2) my fear that he will increase ticket prices above market value. He will have to make coaching hires in football and men's basketball in the next few years. I expect the football hire to come from within the program. The basketball coach is the one that I care most about, and to answer poster's question, no I don't think Steve Forbes would have been hired if Carter was the AD (or if Dr. Noland wasn't the President). I hope that Carter is humble enough to seek Sander's input on that hire.

To be clear, I do think it is wonderful to have someone in the position that truly cares about the university and has broad local public support. I don't see him leaving for another institution, and I do think that he will be able to raise the funds needed to keep us competitive and make further infrastructure improvements. I would like to see him break ground on an outdoor track and the long desired upgrades to Thomas Stadium. But don't raise ticket prices above the current levels for any sport!
