Our talent lends itself for this type of team. That said, the obvious question mark is our OL. If they can support a running game we have the horses to run wild this year.

From the sound of things our WR depth (not to mention the fact that we'll actually use TEs once more) has been fleshed out through camp thus far, so when we need to air it out a bit we've got the guys to get that done too. Now....getting them the ball? Well, that's of course another HUGE question mark. I think either Moore, or Trail, can be an effective game manager. Personally, I'm a bit intrigued by the athleticism of Trail. If the OL falters, he can get outside the box and throw (perhaps more) effectively than, Moore.

Until we get a better QB I feel like we won't see what our coach's offense truly looks like. In the meantime, I think we have a chance to succeed regardless. I feel this is primarily due to the adequate potential of our DL. We're looking like we're going to have a very very solid rotation of talent along the DL...not to mention they're being coached up by a guy that turned BC's DL into one of the best. I don't know that our talent level along the DL is all that far off from BC's. A better rush puts the onus on our DBs to hold up their end of the bargain, and I believe that it's entirely possible that happens.

Our D wasn't horrible last year, and with better coaching personnel i think it's entirely possible we see even better production this year. If the offense can avoid being TOTALLY inept for quarters on end we have a chance to see marked improvement this year.

I know it's not fashionable to credit the previous staff with anything, but we should all be thankful for the talent they've left behind in a few position groups that are likely to be instrumental this year.

mc

Hope you are right, Marcus, but our defense has had an extremely difficult time getting off the field on third down for two consecutive seasons, if not three. That's where it is hoped that the new coaching staff will make a big difference, along with special teams, which were gawd awful in 2016.

I'm just hoping good coaching and playing with desire will go far enough for UC to be vastly improved.

They still do not have strong arms.

Neither of them is capable of throwing an out to the sideline with authority.

Further, when Moore throws the ball long, it looks like he just puts it up there and hopes that the receiver is the one who comes down with it. Moore got picked off frequently during practice.

Ross Trail is a fast runner and has very good acceleration after he decides to turn it on. I guess this is what "the former coach who will not be named" was talking about when he mentioned that Trail was "ath-uh-let-ik". He throws better than Moore on the run.

Jaylyin Minor (MLB) is an animal. I would love to know his true weight.

JaQuay Savage (WR transfer from Louisville) is a really nice young man. Very big, very fast. Very NFL looking. If he works out, that signing is going to be huge. I spoke to him for a minute and he is very happy to get a chance at UC.

Jerron Rollins (WR) is going to be in my binoculars every time he lines up. The kid is a physical specimen. When the team quit for lunch, he stayed out on the field for a half hour with two underclassmen and had them pulling at his arms while someone else was throwing passes to him. It was almost 90 degrees and he was in no hurry to get off of the field.

I love the Receiving Corps this year. I just pray that the OC uses Moore as a game manager and doesn't expect Moore to commit any miracles.

If the O line blocks, Mike Boone will break records this year.

CLF is literally involved in every single thing going on on the practice field at all times. He is everywhere. I've never seen anything like him.

Thanks for those detailed analyses. I hope we can find a solution at QB by next year, we need to be competent at passing as well as running the ball.

We have the solution. We have two solutions. Moore and Trail. They just need to get bigger and stronger. They are both talented. I was at the Memphis State Game in Memphis when Gunner was knocked out and Moore threw for 5 million yards. He can do it. He just needs to be stronger so that he can zip it in there.

I used to toss football on occasion with QB Cade McNown (1st round, 12th pick, Bears, 1999) He was 6'1" 210. Despite not being a big guy, Cade threw really hard. Hard enough that it could be painful catching the football when he was being a dick.

Hayden Moore is listed at 6'3" 215. While I'm guessing that those website stats might be a little generous, I just don't believe that there should be such a disparity in arm strength.

I first met Cade when he was a Junior, which is what Moore is now. Moore should be able to force that ball in there on those quick slants...

DL

Cade McNown... Was he the one who projectile-vomited on the field against (I think) Oregon? That traumatized the hell out of me when I was a kid. I had a mouth full if deviled egg at that moment 03-puke

Anyway, it's gotta be Moore. The real question is will this be the year we finally have one starter at QB for the entire season? Time will tell...

LOL. Yea. That was Cade. Believe it or not, He wasn't sick. Just really nervous. I was at that game.

Interesting. Did Moore win with play, or because Trail got banged up recently? Regardless, I'm looking forward to Thursday.

Is it bad that I wanted to make a McCowan/Hoyer/Fitzpatrick joke?

I don't think he's going to come out and say "Oh yeah, Hayden won the job because the better guy is hurt." But, I think Hayden won the job, because Trail didn't have the opportunity to finish camp.

If we get up big on AP, will we see Sopko?

Coach Fickell has previously stated he wants to avoid the QB shuffle like we had last season. He wants to pick one and ride that horse the rest of the season if possible. That being said, my opinion is if Moore struggles against Austin Peay and Trail has a better command we could see them switch.

I'd say there is a pretty good chance that we will see Sopko or Moore, if he's healthy, later in the game, maybe mid 4th quarter. Fickell is going to want to get us much tape on his team as he can before the trip up North. He knows the odds are against him, but he's going to try.

Listened to Coach Fickell's media interview with the AAC yesterday. From the interview it appeared Hayden always in the lead, the first scrimmage just muddied the water a bit. Coach mentioned Hayden has the experience and is the better leader of the two.

Just an update on Gibson. My BOT member at Gulf Coast tells me Gibson said he intends to return as he really likes CLF.

Yes I know he is a free agent but as of now he intends to return.

To that same point though, I hope we bury them early then go vanilla. We're in the cat bird's seat since there is no tape on either offense or defense for us at the moment. Wouldn't want to give any needless information to a team who already has us outgunned.

I think the AP game will go a long way to calming some nerves about the staff if we go out there and treat them like a BK coached team would.

Sounds like there may be some fencing to mend though. Seems like Gibson left without letting anyone know what he was doing.

Getting Gibson back would be great, however I'm not expecting it. If he REALLY wants to be a QB at UC staying here woulda been his best bet. This year would have been a great opportunity to get in reps in our offense.

If he comes back he's going to be looking up at Moore, and Trail, and potentially others who simply have a better command of the O.

We'll see!

Sounds like he's not a lock to start down there this year either.

So is Trail available for Michigan?

And if so, do we start him or is it better to start Moore since he has a game under his belt this year? Our qb situation sucks.

My GCCC BOT contacts husband (UC alumni) watched Gibson last night. He said of course it was JC but Gibson was a man amongst boys. Big strong fast. Big arm can throw 60 yards without effort.
