I like your list. If Schor leads the Dukes to back-to-back NC he'd obviously swap positions with Rascati.
For me, it is still Cawley as number one with Vad as a close number 2. The rest of the top five were all very good QBs but Cawley and Vad were just a little better. For proof, just look at the two QBs that garnered NFL interest as a QB. The NFL scouts know who the best college QBs are and they get looks in the NFL and CFL.
Forget stats etc. If there was an NC game played tomorrow and I could pick the best JMU QB of all time in their prime to play that game, it would be Cawley first and only by the slimmest of margins. The eye test says those two are just special.
Brings up a good point: Are we talking about the best QB for JMU while he was here. Or the best QB for JMU while he was here who ALSO had pro potential? Personally, I rank 'em just on what they were able to do in college, even if they weren't prototypical.
I think of a guy like Eric Crouch from Nebraska who won the Heisman. Great QB for the offense that Nebraska ran, but zero chance to make the pros. Rodney was perfect for our offense at the time and able to carry the team on his shoulders-but for the pros, he wasn't what they wanted. Sadly, a guy like Michael Birdsong probably had a better shot at making a pro roster (at QB) than Vad or Rodney. Pro GMs drool over size and arm strength, sometimes at the expense of leadership and smarts. It's the Jeff George syndrome.

I agree with all of this. What also comes in to play is how good was the rest of the team. Rascatti and Schor are the only two QBs to win NCs. If success on the field is your barometer then they would have to be 1 and 2.
Cawley had talent around him and a good coaching staff but he did not have the coaching staff and depth of talent JMU has today. This, being picked in the 6tth round and what he was able for do in the 4th quarter of games are why he is my #1. He helped JMU win a lot of games almost single handily just as Rodney did. Rascality had probably the best o line in JMU history and Schor the deepest roster.
Vad is probably my all time favorite QB because of the person he is along with his great talent. He is the ultimate lead by example human being.

Never heard of any of them... except Vad Lee, because he played for Georgia Tech.

Ever heard of Jeff Blake? David Garrard? Robert Jones? Earnest Byner?
Maybe you should try watching the NFL on Sundays, then.
These guys aren't just camp-fodder, either... all on real contracts. 3 of them are Pro-Bowl players.
We have several more guys who will probably get cut in camp, like most JMU guys..
Chris Johnson
Zay Jones
Linval Joseph
Justin Hardy
Dwayne Harris
Josh Hawkins
CJ Wilson
1) This thread is about great JMU QB's. The only reason this has anything to do with ECU is one of those QB's listed is the one that is currently on a JMU favored to beat an ECU team at home
2) According to NFL.com, ECU is 12 active players in the NFL to JMU's 8. Conclusion? Both have players in the NFL. Congrats.
3) While we are on the subject of NFL greats from our respective institutions...

RE: Best JMU Quarterback
After reading Madia's piece about Schor's trip from Miami (OH) to Lackwanna and then JMU, how pissed is Towson's Rob Ambrose right now? You recruit the kid out of HS, he turns you down. You recruit him at Lackwanna, goes to another CAA school as a back up, then goes on to win a national championship. Ambrose is saying, JFC that could've been us.

I thought Schor had a sloppy game tonight. If he was on, the Dukes would have won by even more.

He is out two of his likely top targets. The great thing is, it gets better from here.

He managed the game. Read an article about him recently how he was trying to be the best guy on the field. Now his goal is to make the people around him better. He did that. Don't worry he will blow it up soon.

RE: Best JMU Quarterback
We should start a Best Offensive Lineman ever thread. We've had some good ones of course. But, I'm thinking Aaron Stinnie has to start being a legit mention in that discussion. He's outstanding. This entire O-Line is for that matter. Any concerns about this offense during the off-season hopefully were answered last night to a degree. I say "to a degree" because ECU's defense is not good at all.

He did miss some throws that he usually makes (e.g. on the first possession he had his man over the middle and sailed the ball killing the drive) but I wouldn't say he was sloppy. He still made some terrific throws and made some great plays with his feet and athleticism. Sometimes those things don't show up in the box score. His ability to escape and get rid of the ball is huge vs. taking a 15 yard sack.

I agree. I also feel he set the bar so high last year that it is going to be tough for him to match that play.

RE: Best JMU Quarterback
Indeed. If he completes 73% of his passes again this year he will be without a doubt JMU's best QB ever. We will accept a measly 68% from the FCS Joe Montana
