8/20 Practice Notes
These are going to be a bit abbreviated because I only stayed for the first hour due to needing to travel and the fact it was raining, but...

Ryan Graham is your starting QB. Beyond that, unless he's a disaster I do not anticipate them playing more than 1 QB against BC. Graham took every snap with the 1s and Santa took all the snaps with the 2s.

You can officially put the QB derby to bed.

However, it looks like Anthony Thompson has passed Childers on the depth chart. They were practicing OTs today and Thompson, not Childers, was the third QB up. Threw a TD pass to boot. Again, I was only there for the first hour, but I didn't see Childers take a single snap in team.

Graham was Graham. Nothing specially but didn't do anything noticeably bad either. Santa threw a brutal pick in the OT period and one of the coaches yelled at him because the safety was sitting over the top. Yelled at Santa to "not guess." Santa also caught Carey's ire by trying to hand off a high snap on a jet sweep instead of just taking off with it. They fumbled the exchange.

There's a lot of dudes knicked up right now. There were at least 6-8 guys in the green non contact jerseys which are usually reserved for QBs. The good news is, the majority were in pads and going through individual drills. Lurry warmed up, but he was in a green jersey and wasn't even in pads, so he's still in concussion protocol. I didn't see either Beene or Saffold on the field at all.

I would imagine that's pretty normal for this point of camp. The fact they've escaped major injury so far (assuming Beebe isn't seriously injured) is good.

With Beebe's absence, I thought Tears had a really nice day. He caught Carey's praise 3 times in the hour I was there.

A name you've heard both myself and 1981 mention before is Jonathan Parker, the Iowa grad transfer. Not only is he the #1 KR along with Huff, he was working with the 2s at CB AND split time practicing at RB/WR with the offense as well. He's a name you're going to want to know for BC.

As always, thank you 7. Did you get the sense the team is gelling? It does seem there's a renewed energy with this year's team.

It was the same as the practices I went to a few weeks ago. Noticeably high energy which is good. We'll see if it ends showing up on the field in a couple weeks though.

Regarding Graham, as long as he makes good decisions and gets the ball in the hands of playmakers, we'll be fine.

If Graham plays like he did last year, Carey can start packing his bags. It's his job on the line and he's staking on Graham performing.

Thanks for the notes 7!! I'm not surprised to hear that Graham is getting the nod at QB. I hope he surprises everyone and has a great year for us. I can't wait for September 1st. Let's do this.....

It does seem he grew an inch and put on more weight. He's now listed as 6', 2". And yes, I'm trying to look for any positive at this point. Go Huskies!

Thompson looked good at Tuesday's scrimmage too so he seems to have some momentum. Don't care for a three man QB race? We could have a five man QB race next year.

It's good to hear they're working Parker on offense as well as defense. Get that speed on the field any way you can.

Keep in mind, Thompson is from Mount Carmel and was considered to have very similar attributes as Lynch.

Common sense would say that, but I don't think Carey's job is on the line this year.

1-3 NC, 3 wins or less in conf, yes, it will be his job.

I just don't see how it goes from a 2 QB race, to 3 to #3 being replaced so it seems.

How can you not have settled on a QB by now? Element of surprise is NIUs secret weapon. Yeah. I don't care who plays, I just don't want to see losses as a direct result of lack of QB play.

RE: 8/20 Practice Notes
Is it possible Childers is hurt, couldn't be at practice or played after 7 left?

Maybe the staff wanted to look more closely at Thompson on this particular day or during the first hour

I don't see how anyone could jump to any conclusions based on one fan's observations for one hour of practice.

Who does it look like will be the mainstays on defense? Mykelti Williams in there at all? Dline going to be by committee?

Anyone on defense stand out?

I doubt he's hurt because he did everything else and it's not like he'd get touched in team.

Totally possible he played after I left though.

They have settled on a guy. It's Graham.
I went to Saturday's family practice. Let me be positive and say the defense looks good as they held the offense from moving down the field.

Graham got the majority of the practice snaps with the off vs def on the field. He struggled with in cut timing routes. Was able to hit receivers when the defense played zone. It allowed receivers to stop in pocket of zone and provide Graham the target.

Santa was next and when he runs you see his natural ability. His passing was inconsistent and on this day did not make me feel comfortable that he would be able to move the team. He did mention after the practice that the coaches threw him some curve ball offensive calls. Again this was just 1 practice with him not getting tons of plays.

Thompson got the 3rd most opportunities IMO which wasn't very much.

I will note that the defense was able to get to the qbs on numerous occasions. Is that great defense or poor offense? Maybe both.

The team was practicing fast but maybe not as fast as "Being PJ Fleck"'s team up in Minnesota.

There were some mistakes and corrections needed like a snap that never happenes but the rest of the team moved. Stuff like that.

This day was more about passing than running and the defense won this battle.

Overall the guys are working hard and there is plenty of positive energy. I'm excited for the season as there is real talent on this team. I hope it gells.
