Texas removes 4 statues overnight
http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/univ...ht-n794411

When the University of Texas removed the Jefferson Davis statue (and the paired Woodrow Wilson statue), they sent out a survey and had a thoughtful process. This time they just did it overnight.

Two of those removed, AS Johnston and John Reagan were also prominent Texas Revolution figures. Johnston was actually in the Confederate Army less than a year before being killed at Shiloh (like Stonewall Jackson, probably by friendly fire). He didn't join the Confederates until the Union officials tried to arrest him in California.

Reagan had a long history both before and after the war. He was Postmaster General for the Confederacy during the war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Henninger_Reagan
"Historian Ben H. Procter included Reagan in his list of the "four greatest Texans of the 19th century," along with Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and James Stephen Hogg. Reagan County, Texas is named in his honor.[2] " And perhaps Reagans greatest accomplishment: 04-cheers "Despite the problems the war caused, his department managed to turn a profit, "the only post office department in American history to pay its own way," wrote William C. Davis."

Barkley-"I'm not going to waste my time worrying about these Confederate statues," Barkley told the Independent Journal Review. "That's wasted energy."

Statues are obsolete. No more statues.

THIS^^^^^^^^

These statues have been there for all 8 years of Obama and nobody cared. Now suddenly they have become a deeply personal affront. Reminds of how the homeless only becomes a national issue for TV while Republicans are in office. Bottom line---these statues are a local issue. Let the states and local governments sort it out.

Frankly, as a nation, we have bigger fish to fry.

Atlanta looking at removing anyone with any connection to the Confederacy or even the Jim Crow era (Henry Grady).

"A city spokeswoman said Atlanta’s Confederate-themed monuments include The Lion of the Confederacy statue in Oakland Park (erected in 1894), the Confederate Obelisk Monument in Oakland Cemetery(1874), the Peace Monument in Piedmont Park (1911), the Sidney Lanier Bust in Piedmont Park and at Oglethorpe University (1915), the Henry Grady Monument on Marietta Street (1889) and the General Walker Monument on Glenwood Avenue.

Some of the streets under consideration include Confederate Avenue in Grant Park, Stonewall Street near Northside Drive and English Avenue, which was named for former Atlanta Mayor and Civil War soldier James English. "

I find it pretty offensive that they would even consider removing cemetery monuments. Oddly enough, they mention the Lanier bust at Oglethorpe University which is a private university and not in the city of Atlanta.
