I can just about guaran-dang-tee that SMU fans won't have interest in this. That doesn't mean we shouldn't keep it going though. They can just be unwilling participants.

C-USA Lone Star Champships: North Texas

Fans, are we going to take this dubious title to the AAC? Would SMU fans even be interested? These are the questions we must answer before we officially join the American. Thoughts?

This is a CUSA branded trophy.
What happens in CUSA stays in CUSA.

Or, stays in the trophy case of any departing school who is in possession of the title at the time of exit.

2001-2004: First intra-Texas CUSA games. TCU was 4-0 vs Houston and left CUSA with the trophy.

2005-present is the modern era and began with SMU holding it initially. All four Texas teams held it in the first four years. Houston hung on for two full seasons, but in 2012, before departing, SMU took it from UH, then Rice took it from SMU to hold it when those two left.
Rice twice defended successfully in 2013 before UNT took it (8th and goal) which is about the time it was formally recognized with an official thread on csnbbs.

The challenge now for 2022 is to UTEP: can they snag it to retain trophy continuity all the way back to 2005? Or will one of the AAC departees take a souvenir for their trophy case as TCU did in 2004?

The early days (prior to current CUSA lineup):

2001-4 TCU (departed with trophy)
2005 SMU
2006 UTEP, UH
2007 UH
2008 UH, Rice
2009 SMU
2010-1 UH
2012 SMU, Rice

The Texas Title will be back up for grabs tomorrow in El Paso. UNT has held the belt since ruining UTSA's undefeated season in their last conference game.

The title in its current form will be retired at the end[/align] of this football season. UTEP hasn't held the Texas Title since 2016.

Lineage of the Title
North Texas (Nov. 27, 2021- current)
UTSA (Nov. 28, 2020- Nov. 27, 2-2021)
North Texas (Nov. 21, 2020- Nov. 28, 2020) 7 Days
Rice (Nov. 23, 2019-Nov. 21, 2020)- 363 Days
North Texas (Nov. 24, 2018-Nov. 23, 2019) -365 Days
UTSA (Oct. 21, 2017-Nov. 24, 2018) -399 Days
Rice (Nov. 19, 2016-Oct. 21, 2017) -337 Days
UTEP (Nov. 6, 2015-Nov. 19,2016) -380 Days
Rice (Nov. 21, 2014-Nov. 6, 2015) -351 Days
UTEP (Oct. 25, 2014-Nov.21, 2014) -28 Days
UTSA (Nov. 23, 2013-Oct.25, 2014) -337 Days
North Texas (Oct. 31, 2013-Nov. 23, 2013) -24 Days
Rice (Aug. 31, 2013-Oct. 31, 2013) -61 Days

UNT 31
UTEP 13

UNT retains the Texas Title. UTEP could get another chance at the belt if UNT loses to UTSA on Oct.22nd and then the Runners retain the championship against Rice on Nov. 19th.

I think you're going to have to reformat this thing as a G5 Lone Star championship now that realignment has mixed everything up.

No. I think the title will retire with whichever team holds it at the conclusion of the season. I guess if UTEP can earn it on the field later in the season, they can keep it going between them and SHSU, but I doubt the Miners will end the season with it.

UNT, Rice, & UTSA will probably just create a new Texas Title for the AAC. Of course SMU will hate the idea, which only makes me want to do it even more. COGS

You cannot spell "smug" without s, m, and u.

And once we are in the AAC, we will hold a 3-1 advantage if UTSA, UNT and Rice all vote as a block.

Heck, if the C-USA6 vote as a block, the AAC8 can’t take actions that require 2/3rds or more member votes. Remind the SMU and USF fans of that.
