Afghanistan-the 4 options
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/08/18...her-241761

Trump is meeting with advisers and they are presenting 4 options. Article strongly supports #2, a small increase in forces.

#1 Status quo isn't working.
#3 Private contractors is unlikely to get approval in Kabul.
#4 Withdrawal risks turning Afghanistan over to Al-Queda.

McCain's idea of a major expansion is apparently not one of the options.

Author argues for private contractor option and for the "Deal Maker" to make a deal with Russia, China, Pakistan and Iran on Afghanistan.

RE: Afghanistan-the 4 options
I don't see any of the 4 as a winning solution. Afghanistan will never be stable until their citizens make it happen themselves. We can't just secure it for them forever. Even if they paid us for it, it isn't worth the lives of American soldiers.

Giving a Trillion bucks to Blackwater is not an option.

Walk away.

The only people who can settle Afghanistan are the Afghanis.

If they don't want it then the blood of our young men will not fix it.

Private contractors without a government to restrict them? Doesn't sound like a very good idea. Russia has tried that with their invasion of the Ukraine and ended up shooting down a passenger airliner.

ditto for the bazillionth time....

let them handle that crap....if we need to step in, the next time should only involve unmanned weaponry....

the money we're wasting is mindnumbing in ROI.....

We are either willing to go in there and start killing people wholesale until they get tired of dying, or we are not. If not, then get out. I'm not, so I say get out.

Thought came to mind. Legalize poppy production in government controlled territory. Almost everyone is a capitalist at heart, right? Cuts off a major revenue source for the Taliban. Trying to keep it out of the US is our problem, not one we try to solve in Afghanistan.

I'm in the walk away group. There is not anything there vital to our national interests. Terrorist can train and get money in a lot of places, so controlling that hell hole matters not.
