The re-imagined Booksellers at Laurelwood re-opened yesterday as Novel. I'm going by there this afternoon before the monthly meeting of the Memphis Writer's group. I hope we can all support this awesome bookstore!

I'm impressed. It's big enough but not huge. The cafe is in the same place and hopefully will have a more accessible menu this time. The children's area is back, right up front. There's a huge space in the back for meetings and signings, and they'd already sold out of my second book. All in all, a relief.

The Memphis store wasn't the problem, the Cincinnati store was. Locally the bookstore lost $25k last year, which was sustainable, at least in the short term. The used book section was a terrible idea, and I don't think the CD/DVD section did well either. Also, I was told the cafe lost money because of the way it was run.

At times, esp. recently, I thought the cafe food was not very good. And the service at the bar was poor.

After my signing last year I wanted to eat with friends and relatives. It was about 4 in the afternoon. I wanted a hamburger.

Nope, not until after five. Service was bad, food was fair but expensive. All the employees I spoke with agreed it was a problem spot. So if the new one is good and well run it could make a huge difference.

When they moved across the parking lot to the spot on the end and added the cafe. They were in the middle of that shopping center.

Thanks! For some reason, my mind has gone blank on them being in that spot. When did they move? I think I have lived too long....

Wow, they moved a long time ago. But like I said, the problem wasn't here in Memphis, although the used books and cafe didn't help things. The problem was in Cincy.

I know. I still call it Davis-Kidd, and suggested they name the new store Davis-Kid.
