Shocker hoops question
Let me begin by saying I'm really happy your team stepped up and joined the AAC.
(Jury is still out on the fan base though)

Your team has a really great history through the years and it looks like they will be very good this season

So here is my question:

Could this be your best team ever?

Anyone of you who follow closely think so?

If not.... rank 'em for us!

Thanks.... and see you real soon.

Your new bestie,

SB

RE: Shocker hooos question
The weekend has already started for Mr. Bud.

No, this year's team isn't our best ever. It might be top 10. How do you judge best teams? NBA draftees? Depth of run in the NCAA's? The team with X, Carr, and Levingston was probably one of our best ever.

RE: Shocker hoops question
I'm not a WSU fan but have been watching them since 80-81 because of the TU rivalry. I have to agree with Cold, that Levingston, Carr, McDaniel team was a terror. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the three only played together one year, X's freshman year, then Carr (?) went to the NBA.

From a league pride perspective, few things would please me more than Wichita winning a national title this year. Get'r done, Shocks.

I think this team has everything it takes to be the best team we've had under Marshall. We'll see how they do this season. As of right now I don't think it's the best team we've ever had, but it's hard to compare teams from different eras.

RE: Shocker hoops question
Our best team ever was on probation in the 80's. That is another reason we hate KU. This team might be the best of the Marshall Era. The team with FVV, Baker, Cotton, Hall, and Cle was pretty damn great, but it all hinges on how the Great Dane plays, IMO. A definite title contender, that is for sure.

RE: Shocker hoops question
One could also make a strong case for 1963-64. The 64-65 team went to the F4 without 6-7 220 All American Stallworth (who ran out of 4 years eligibility at semester-he started his eligibility at semester and played 4 years-an oddity but not in that era) and Nate Bowman 6-10 240 lb. Center, who became academically ineligible at semester. One of the best and super quick point guards, (although of small stature) of the era (Ernie Moore) was a Senior during the 63-64 year. Bowman was one of the best rebounding Centers of the era and Stallworth was a great rebounder, could post up, and a fine perimeter player. The team was stacked with super role players and shooters Dave Leach and Kelly Pete who played on the F4 team the next year. Both Bowman and Stallworth played for the NY Knicks for several years and were on the World Championship Knicks team. Many think that this is the best team in Shocker history. This was Ralph Miller's final team at WSU and of course, he is in the College Basketball HOF too. Miller had some very good teams but the 63-64 team was probably his best.

Since this is about asking questions, here's mine:

Is the big Danish (6-11) kid on campus? Does he look like a difference maker?

He is on campus. I doubt he's going to be a difference maker, our front-court depth is better than our guard depth. With that said, he is a competent, 7-foot, strong freshman. We have yet to have a player that met all of that criteria.

He's on campus and measured 7'0" and 270 at his physical. He has been described as a chiseled 270.

He's been playing (as an amateur) in a Euro pro league. There are a lot of former American college players in his league. He's been mainly playing against 24- to 28-year old guys who were mid-major level in college. He's a 20-year-old Fr.

We don't have any info on his foot speed or his athleticism. He was a 9 point and 8 boards player in around 20 minutes in the pro league. He's only played basketball for 6 years, so he's still developing.

Early reports say that he's got a good basic skill set.

This year, he will probably only get mop up minutes and maybe some late first half minutes to get some on-court American D1 experience.

Give him a year or two and some coaching and I think he could be a difference maker. This year he gets to practice against 3 posts with completely different offensive styles, so he will have a year to work on D against a variety of attacks on the basket.
