New Conference Member Trophy Games
With all the upheaval in conference realignment over the last 15 years there are lots of new members to every conference. With these new members brings the opportunity for new rivalries to be embraced.

Rutgers/Penn State Washingtons Oar to celebrate Washington crossing from PA into NJ.
Rutgers/Maryland The Blue Claw Cup to celebrate both states love of crabs
Utah/Colorado The Golden Skis since both a top notch skiing states

Any others anyone can think of?

I know some of these have new trophies for real, but those are lame.

Missouri-Kentucky. Border states trophy. Trophy for 2 SEC former slave states who stayed loyal to the union during civil war.

Missouri-Arakansas - The Deliverance Banjo!

Illinois-Rutgers - The Sopranos-Capone Organized crime award to the the 2 states with the highest level of corruption and highest property taxes.

Iowa-Neb The golden corn cob

I can't think of even one time when a manufactured rivalry actually took off.

Rivalries cannot be wished or declared into being, they have to emerge organically via the competition on the field and the interaction of the fan bases. It never happens any other way.

E.g., about 20 years ago the B1G tried to make Michigan State and Penn State "rivals", and yet to this day neither fan base cares a whit about the other school, the rivalry content is zero.

Yeah but proximity breeds contempt. In state or border state rivals make sense naturally. Ohio State and Michigan didn't just hate each other before football. Everything starts somewhere and the best rivalries are usually by schools close to each other or two bordering states.

I am not sure the bold is what you meant to say. Ever since the battle of Toledo (two sets of drunk idiots fired at each other across the river ... seems the only damage was limited to some bushes and trees, Texas sharpshooters all) there has been mild animosity between the two states. We Buckeyes are proud to say we gave them the nickname Wolverines in the first place for being such nasty vicious animals. The only other border war, and one with much deeper animosity is Kansas and Missouri; unfortunately in that war both sides could aim deadly straight.

Excepting some historical underpinning like Ohio-Michigan or Kansas-Missouri, I completely agree, you cannot invent a rivalry.

Of course having a coach like Jim Harbaugh he could set off a rivalry vs anyone. The Stanford vs USC suddenly became a bigger rivalry for those two schools than the Cal-Stanford or USC-UCLA (and still is) because of that little Harbaugh vs Caroll "what's your deal?"

The "Civil Conflict" is by far my favorite 04-rock. It is right there with the "Nobody gives a rats ass rumble" and the "if A tree falls in the Forrest does it make a sound brawl"

I kind of like the civil conflict trophy primarily because both sides hate it so much. It might be the only trophy game where the loser has to take home the trophy.

I think the Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois should have some sort of apple-related trophy based off the PRI (Purdue/Rutgers/Illinois) Apple Breeding Program that those universities started in 1945. Here are several apple cultivars the program has developed since its inception 70+ years ago:

Prima (1970)
Priscilla (1972)
Sir Prize (1975)
Jonafree (1979)
Redfree (1981)
Dayton (1988)
Williams Pride (1988)
Enterprise (1993)
GoldRush (1993)
Pristine (1994)
Scarlett O'Hara (2000)
Sundance (2004)
Pixie Crunch (2004)
CrimsonCrisp (2006)

Bawhahaha. That was about the dumbest thing ever....2 schools with very little football history, no history as rivals, no connection whatsoever/shared characteristics with about a million miles between them decide to make up a rivalry game. Kudos to the ucf guys for not even wanting to pick it up after winning the Big game.

Since the MAC wants to make sure Toledo and BG play every season, they've designated Miami-Ball State to be the other annual crossover game since we're pretty close geographically and no one else makes sense. Late last year the two schools announced that the game will be the "Red Bird Rivalry,' so while it's kinda lame at least they've been a conference opponent for a while instead of something created out of thin air.

I can co-sign that the needle doesn't move when we play Penn State, not even a little bit after 20 years.

I was sad UCF didn't take home the trophy. That's how rivalry games start. That wasn't started by a conference or ADs but a crazy coach talking crap. That's college football. UConn should mail the trophy to the UCF coach with a note saying let's play for it again this year.

It's also produced the ugliest trophy in existence, so there's that...

Well we can see how the 4 game series goes. Unfortunately playing Temple only reminds me of the late 90s when both programs were horrible -- or the 2002 game played at Rutgers in driving rain when it really was a feat if you went to the game and stayed for it.

I'd like to say that if we had stayed in the American it would have developed, but our fanbase would have been dejected by being left behind and wouldn't have been invested. We also did have something decent brewing with UConn in football but realignment took care of that.

NIU and Ball State have been playing for the Bronze Stalk trophy since 2008. Yes it's lame. But neither school really has any rivalries in football so that was the thought process I guess.
