The Mossos d’Esquadra is a little more paramilitary than what we experience here with law enforcement. Catalonia is an autonomous region of Spain and instead of relying on the Spanish National Police and Civil Guard, although both agencies keep a token force in the region. The rifle he raised was likely an H&K G36 select fire, the same rifle that is the main weapon of the Spanish military.
