"Us" or "Em"?

"In a goof that could play into President Trump’s “fake news” complaints, Politico initially published a faulty transcript Tuesday of his defiant remarks on Charlottesville that – thanks to a single word change – made it look like Trump was directly identifying with the white nationalists involved.

The impromptu press conference has resulted in a new wave of bipartisan criticism for the president, who went after the “alt-left” for their alleged role in the deadly violence at the white nationalist rally. Trump said there’s blame on “both sides,” claiming some in attendance were not neo-Nazis and merely in Charlottesville to protest the removal of Confederate symbols.

But a single stray word in the initial Politico transcript fueled his critics even more.

The transcript reflected Trump saying: “Okay, what about the alt-left that came charging at us?”

The line quickly spread on social media.

Politico’s own Annie Karni flagged it on Twitter, saying: “Just noticed the use of ‘us’ in this transcript.”

The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman then picked up on Karni’s tweet, as did reporters from The Washington Post, CNBC and elsewhere.

Trump: "what about the alt-left that came charging at us – excuse me – that came charging at the, as you say, alt-right?"

The problem was, it was not clear exactly what Trump said at the end of that sentence; he may have simply said, “em.”

Politico, along with some of the reporters who picked up the original transcript, later walked it back.

Politico put out an updated transcript that shows Trump saying: “Okay, what about the alt-left that came charging at [indiscernible] – excuse me – what about the alt-left that came charging at the, as you say, the alt right? Do they have any semblance of guilt?”

Politico explained that it updated the transcript after listening to the audio again. A “correction” note at the bottom says, “In a review of the audio, we could not definitively discern Trump's exact words at that moment in the news conference.”

If you saw the video, it does in fact look like he was going to say "us" and made a hand gesture as well with his hands pointing toward his chest.

One thing I noted in the video that was interesting was that he said some people were wearing black with masks and sticks. The only people I saw wearing masks and sticks were the White Supremacists.

It made me wonder if he even knew who was whom in the videos.

Thats what I find most horrific in the coverage. Look, we can all agree that nazis, white power, and other hate groups are all abhorrent. That said, any unbiased indifferent person can see that the counter protesters appear to be very aggressive hurling themselves at the Nazi's using clubs while the Nazis appear to be in generally a defensive postures largely using shields. I hate the Nazi people there---but its clear there was violence on both sides and, if we are honest, the counter protesters appeared to be initiating most of the clashes I saw on TV.

Yet, when Trump says there was violence on both sides people go crazy. Its right there in hours of video endlessly looped on various news networks. When you cant state an obvious objective fact that is clearly supported by widely available video seen by everyone---without being ridiculed for it-----well, I find that chilling.

Some folks are purposely ignoring the facts to further an agenda. It's sad to see but it's where we are today politically.

Exactly. There isn't even an attempt to report what actually happened,. any attempt to say, "there was plenty of fault to go around", it's immediately met with "But. White Nationalists this, Nazi's that"

Yea, again, we get that. Next to no one supports that, literally. Doesn't mean this F-antifa violence isn't real or didn't happen.

Hell, one story I saw had a ninja-cuck with a freaking homemade flame thrower. You don't just mistakenly pick up Dad's old flamethrower on your way to a peaceful arm in arm "march".

I listened to it live and I thought he said us and then corrected himself.

As well as my new favorite, a Sig P226 TacOps .40, and a S&W Bodyguard .380 in a neato new ankle holster. Yes, I'm a bit paranoid but such is life in Memphis. Not to get too side-tracked but I've been a Glock guy for over 20 years and then I bought the Sig, such a sweet handgun! The Glocks - 22 .40 and 17 9mm - feel strange to me now, even with the trigger mods I installed to pull them down to 3.5 lbs.

Here is MY problem....

whether he said 'us' or 'em' really doesn't make any difference except to people trying to call everyone on the right racists. The point is that when someone charges at someone, they are being victimized by aggressors... and not the other way around. Trump's comments are not only about this one single incident, but about NUMEROUS such incidents (Berkeley comes to mind) where violence has been 'justified' by some of the left based on words/opinions expressed by the people they are protesting. This isn't so much a right/left thing as it is a 'free speech' vs 'not free speech' thing... which has some party leanings, but is not universal. The more progressive left and the extreme right are in agreement that speech they find abhorrent should be met with physical violence and legal action.

The VERY clear point that the (libertarian) right are making is that whether or not we agree with the message of the alt-right, the right to have and express an unpopular opinion in this country is inviolate.... and people who charge at you expressing that opinion are the ones inciting violence.

This is a direct counter to the 'micro-aggression through words' policy of some of the left, who use people's words to justify their physical actions.

Your rights stop at my nose is a very common term I've seen LOTS of people use, which clearly implies 'physical' actions.

You make some great points. I wonder however if you believe there should be some restrictions when it comes to protesting. For example, you can't cover your face, or you can't have torches. I say that simply because it is a fire hazard.

I don't see any masks. Another #fitfail?

Actually, I don't remember if the president said masks or helmets. I know he made a jester however with his hand over his head like he was lowering a welders helmet.
